Hi, this may have been asked before, buy couldn't find it after a quick search.

If you have location services turned on, but no apps that use it turned on, does it still eat your battery? I have it on at the moment, but the little arrow doesn't appear on the status bar as no apps are using it. So is the phone still connected to gps and chewing battery?

No, it's not constantly connected to GPS, but there are system services that occasionally use Location Services. In iOS 5 you can turn these off individually. However, if you really want to save battery you should turn Location Services off completely. These system services were the cause of a lot of the recent battery drain problems.
