It'll also be out today I reckon!

Posted this in the Outdoor Pursuits forum:

Went in to have a look at this stuff today. TV ad is that you can get kitted out for skiing for less than 90 quid or whatever and thats more or less what this is suited to. All of the stuff looked grand but not great, so would prob be ideal for someone on their first trip not sure if they were going to go again, that sort of thing.

I reckon if youre more into it then it might be a bit of a false economy and you'd be better just putting your money down on something better. The stuff seemed pretty heavy, in terms of weight, which ultimately is a bit of a downer in the long run.

I am half in the marked for a new pair of salopettes, mainly because the ones I have are too long, but as it happened the choice in there was large / medium. Medium was the right length but impossibly thin on the waist. Large was right waist but too long again.

In fairness I prob will have the same problem when I look for brand name stuff anyway.

They had no gents soft shell trousers which is a pitty cos I could have done with a pair of them and at €20 theyre a bit of a shot to nothing.

Meh, I have to stop wasting my time trekking around looking at this crap - I have 96% of the stuff I need and its fine, if I need anything else I'll generally buy higher end stuff and be gratefull for it.

I bought one last year, it's grand. Conforms to all the standards - so it's a perfectly sound helmet. ONE thing though, I've a rather large head, and this particular helmet make my noggin look like a feckin planet. This year's looks a bit more streamlined I think.

96%? So you've 24 out of the 25 items you need for skiing, Jeez you must be pretty decked out! I wonder if they'll get cheap ass boards in. I'm looking for a smaller one atm.

Serious false economy. The gear is terrible absolutley no breathability so you are going to get wet and cold.

Wont last much more than a season and it weighs a ton while dry never mind when it starts to suck up moisture.

You would be better off hitting TK Maxx and spending your money there.

Yes the helmets will confrim to EU standards but they just pass the mark where others will exceed the standards by a long shot and come with extra tech like, Lighter materials, one piece moulding and Beanie Compatibility, Custom air and Carbon fibre etc.

But hey if you are tight fro cash and want to buy new kit every year in Aldi go nuts :)

Well including spare socks / fleeces etc. about that many I reckon

I do need one of those neck warmer things, two balaclavas gone missing and the last face warmer I bought stinks of oil no matter how many times I wash it?

lol? Sounds weird that. The neck warmers are good going though, have one myself but I never wear it since I do be wrapped up enough I wouldn't be able to breathe with any more clothes! I prefer a bally myself though, can't go wrong, get a thick one so it fits snug with your helmet.

I've done well out of TK Max but you have to do your homework to make sure your not buying ****e. Saw a Spyder jacket in there recently. Haven't seen any helmets in there this season so far, normally they would have loads.

There is plenty of reasonable stuff in 53 Degrees north, Great Outdoors and Snow & Rock as well.

53 Degrees is shocking expensive, quoted me 140 for a pair of gloves that are available in the UK for 65 sterling! I know where I will be buying.

S&R and Great Outdoors I suspect will have pretty big sales come Jan

TK Makk is easy, Anyting that has waterproofing above 5000mm-15,000mm,or breathability around the 10,000g/24hrs/m with taped seams . Will be pucker for most skiers.

You will get these readings on the tag's of most products

I've double checked a lot of their prices for different bits and seem to be on a par with else where, i'm sure some of their gear is expensive but they have a range of gear there so worth a look and def shop around.

Not sure about that, REW picked up a jacket recently and between Great Outdoors and Snow and Rock the diff was less than €5 and 53 where charging an extra €15 but if you had a shop membership it was closer to the other two.

Maybe its just the one in carrickmines but it always seems to be approx a little more pricey than the competition and dont get me started on their boot fitting

Tell me about it, anytime I've been out there it's rediculous. As you say it's simply shocking, I never buy anything from there.

I got a great pair of gloves from Great Outdoors there recently. I'm not a great fan of the place but I had my eye on them. I went in recently and the sale tag was removed though. So I mentioned it to a lad there and he said welllllll ummmmm give it to you for half price? "done" haha. Was €80, got for €40, nice bargain for a v good gortex pair. Great fit too.

I still think you're far better off heading for Tk Max for cheapo stuff or buy online. Ebay ftw!
