anyone have any experience with this crowd?http://www.tyreland.ie/ i need 4 tyres soon (225/45/17) and money is a bit tight. i refuse to put crap tyres on my car so i said i would price up a few part-worns. they said they can suply bridgestone or pirelli for 60 each. these would be grade a with about 75% thread left. any opinions on this?

Best way to go if you can't quite stretch to new premium tyres IMO.

People just don't realise that even premium tyres with 3mm(minimum safety limit) will have better grip and road stability then most new Chinese plastic.

cheers nd. that is my line of thought. i had a lone of a spare wheel with some cheap tyre on it when i was refurbing my alloys and it nearly caused me to crash countless times. the grip was non existent. it locked up under light braking (abs light flashing) there was a contentintl sports contact on the other side (fronts) and it never spun or skidded and it was bald!
just looking on eiretyres here and they have 1 or 2 good deals too

I've gotten tyres from tyreland before and they've been great. The guys up there are really fast and there's loads of top brand tyres you can choose from. I got 4 continentials and they all had loads of thread left.

They're good, been using them for the last few years, previously in 215/45/17 and now in 225/40/18 and 255/35/18.

I got two on the front of my car last week and it has been a while since \I could floor it with no wheelspin.

I agree with the concept of this. But what I'm wondering is where these part worn tyres come from?

Are there enough people changing tyres before they need to, that supply this market or something?

I'm sure I'm missing something really obvious!

I think they import them from Europe where they have 2 change them every winter

I think Germany to be precise. I think its something like once a car has been in any kind of accident they must be changed.
If I am wrong I would be sure that someone will come on and correct me.

Plus they have to fit winters at a certain date. Im sure there are alot of company fleets that dont store them for future use.

I'd have no bother recommending tyreland. I got 4 16' Pirelli wintersports with 6mm fitted and balanced for €200.

Lads were sound and even wrapped thenew tyres and rims in cling for me to transport home as I wasn't fitting them to the car yet.

There are better value places than tyreland and autodepot.

Check out donedeal ads for part worn. Good prices in Walkinstown, Palmerstown and Cabra. Just got some 16" Pirelli tyres for my brother in law's Rav 4 for 30 each.

If you can trust that the ones on donedeal are getting the tyres through the proper certified channels.

A lot of these tires, (most I have been told) are repaired tyres from Europe. i.e had punctures and were repaired.

Now that doesn't mean they're no good, if its a simple puncture a repair can mean the tyre is back to full use. But it's something to keep in mind.

Thats not my experience of part worn with tyreland, they test the tyres on an expensive piece of kit, they sell only top makes and these are better than many new cheap makes. The prices are keen & lads are sound and seem to have expanded from when i was there last year. Would use again without hesitation, i have no association with the company .

Nothing wrong with part worn tyres. Buy from reputable outlet, dont be afraid to have a good look before fitting for any obvious damage, any repairs, and for the real amount of thread. Also remember, a new tyre will have about 6.5mm wearing thread before it hits the legal wear limit with an overall thread of 8mm approx.
A tyre with 4mm thread might look lke a bagain but has little life left, less that 2.5 mm wearing thread.

I'm not saying they're not tested thoroughly or that they're dodgy in any way. But it is where most come from. But as said, if they're repaired properly for simple punctures and the damage isn't to the sidewalls etc then they'll be fine.

And keep in mind that winters have 8-12mm new so a 5mm part worn winter might be close to its severe condition limit.

Many car owners in Germany and the Netherlands for example, will do just that...Then again, they will put their cars through the proper mandated servicing etc, Not like here....

hi robc i take your point, however tyreland get their branded tyres from the likes of germany/holland where either cars have to put on winter tyres and i believe that public sector vehicles have some requirement to change after reaching a certain mm from memory. A good way to go I have two on the front no problems

Are you telling me that one tyre centre in Walkinstown or Cabra that I happened to find through an ad on donedeal is inferior to another tyre centre near the Long Mile road? Struggling to buy that idea, I must say. I know you work for a well known tyre and service centre in Drumcondra, does your employer sell part worns?

All I can say is that I examined the Michelins on my own car (bought in Walkinstown) and the Pirellis on the brother in law's car (bought in Cabra) prior to having them fitted. I measured the thread with a vernier and found them to be good and evenly worn and chose to purchase.

Like most things in life it is up to each of us to make our own decisions. I am happy with mine and put it out there for others to make up their own minds.

I didn't for one second say the ones on done deal weren't any good, I just said you'd want to be sure they are. People advertise all sorts of sh1te one there.

My company doesn't deal in part worns at all.

Tyreland check every tyre they have so you know you are getting a safe tyre at a great price

Tyreland are great and very reasonably priced, went to auto depot and a blow out after 3 weeks with the tyre they fitted, fair enough could have been a coincidence, they then fitted my dads car with van tyres one different size on each wheel,
went and got another tyre yeah i know should have learned my lesson and they fitted a cheap chinese yolk that was part worn took me 30 mins arguing with the fitter to change it, wouldnt use them again and had sent a lot of work there way through my dad who has and his co workers, tyreland are the best customer service ive found

I know of a car (with a clueless owner) fitted recently with four part worns for €50 a corner in Tyreland. He was told they would be around 70% worn. I measured the thread depth and 2 were 4mm and 2 were not more than 5mm. Plus they were all different non well known brands. Now he could have got brand new hankooks for €70 a corner. In this case I think the part worns were overpriced.
So if you add the unknown history of the tyre, then it appears to be a false economy especially on a newish car.

was at tyreland recently on two separate occasions to check availability of 225/55/16.. none on each of these visit for reasonably branded ones..

Only unknown brand like Eurotec.. which is not ideal..

I have to say the guys there are sound in terms of service..
