My 12 year old is asking for a PS3. He says it's free to play online whereas xbox has a monthly charge. Is this correct?

Also, what made you choose a PS3 over an xbox?

    It is.
However, the online service provided on the 360 is very good value - €3-€4 per month.
There is a PS+ service available for €50 per year but is not required for online play.

I have a PS3,360 and a Wii - I prefer the PS3 because of the exclusive titles that are available on it. MGS4, Uncharted, MAG and Demons Souls being favourites.

Having said that both the other consoles have good exclusives too, the Wii has Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and Zack and Wiki.
The one game on the 360 that I really like is the Left For Dead series.

As F1ngers has already answered the PSN question, I will reply to the below.
Also, what made you choose a PS3 over an xbox?

A number of reasons for me:

    - better [IMO] exclusives (Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, Motorstorm, Little Big Planet)
    - free online play
    - better media player capabilities [as well as being a Blu-Ray player also]

Is your child asking for a PS3 for Christmas? Does his friends have PS3s? Also, do you know what type of games he likes or has he specified the games he wants already?

Just to add it's more like a lucky bag of games and stuff each month with a few extra services thrown in, the value of the stuff you get is worth more than 50 but you may not like all of it. There's also discounts on games in the store on top of that.

To be honest, at 12 it really depends what consoles his friends etc have. If all his friends had PS3's then they can swop and trade games which will save you a fortune. He can also play online against them for free. Obviously if all his friends

The PS3 does have some FANTASTIC PS3 exclusive games, Like the Uncharted Series of games and God of War. Uncharted one and two are amazing but are older now so they can be bought quite cheap. Plus, if you get your son a PS3 you will be able to enjoy blu ray (HD) films when he goes to bed. Oh, and Netflicks is coming to Ireland in 2012, meaning you will be able to rent and stream movies from your PS3
