Should I get a laptop?

I'm starting college next year(Medicine, hopefully). However, this Christmas I was thinking of getting a laptop. I do not have an awful lot of money, though. the laptop would be used for study next Sept. and also for just surfing the internet etc. I would like a good-quality laptop, but in saying that, I would not be able to pay thousands of euro!!

Should I get a laptop this early, or instead get one in the Summer, and maybe get an iPad 2-or are they over-rated?

    Thank you:)

You wont exactly be typing up and essay on an ipad 2. So i'd forget that idea. Let us know what your budget is and we can help you. Give us a figure to work with, as saying "not a lot" could mean anything from 600 down to 150.

Don't get one now. Wait until you absolute need it. iPad .... Would you write an essay on a mobile phone ?

I'd wait until the summer after Ivy Bridge is released if you aren't in immediate need of a laptop.

I also had the same idea of using my tablet to take notes. It just doesn't work. Not for courses like Medicine anyway. Take for example something like a Biochemistry or Physiology/Anatomy lecture. You're not going to be just taking down text, you're going to need to make graphical notes as well.

    Thank you for your replies:)

My budget for a laptop would not be more than 500. That's why I'm thinking about leaving a laptop 'til the Summer because I will be able to afford a lot more.

I was thinking of getting an iPad, not for college, but just for leisure. However, would ye recommend one? Is the screen quite small? Is it worth the money? I would only be going on the internet on it!

I really want to get a iPad but it's just for messing around with. I'd wait for the next generation to come out, I've heard rumors that the next one will have a retina display.

Im using my ipad to type this. I bought mine when the second one was released and prices fell. Tbh at the time i wasnt sure id use it much but it probably is one of, if not the best thing ive ever bought. If im doing something with my car and i need a guide i can just bring out the ipad and set it anywhere easily. I never use it for college even though i have microsoft docs on it.
