Installing burner, but what replace old range with?

    hi,

Brief synopsis: Old house, no insulation, vacant during the week. Oil fired central heating which heats a bit (very old) range/stove, and 4 radiators.

Problem is there is no timer on it, the system has to be lit manually.

We need a system which can be put on a timer so it comes on for a few hours during the day/week.

So we're talking of getting an oil burner put in. Thing is, unless we can get the old range converted to allow it not have to be manually lit, then we are a bit stuck.

Can't afford to replace the range with another one I don't think. It's kind of pointless putting in a burner if it won't be able to heat the kitchen (which is where the range currently is).

What are the alternatives to a range? A regular sized radiator would be lost in the space.

We're looking for the easiest & cheapest option, but want it to be efficient at the same time.

    Thoughts/suggestions v welcome!

Hi:) I think in your case a condensing oil fired boiler and an extra radiator in the kitchen somewhere to heat that would be ideal.

As funds allow I would then fit a stove in the space of the old range either with a back boiler or without. If only want hot water and one rad a villager kitchener would be ideal for a stove. Or at a later date fit a boiler stove to heat all the rads.

    Thanks Stove fan.

How much is the villager kitchener? And could it be 'hooked in' with a regular oil burner? (am I using the wrong word there, at the moment the system heats the hot water & the radiator, is that a burner or a boiler, or both?!)

So could the villager kitchener + 4 radiators be heated, along with heating the hot water AND having the whole lot on a timer be achievable if we put in a new burner/boiler (remove as necessary)?

Sorry, I'm not much good with this lingo :o

Hi the villager kitchener is quite expensive at £650 euro plus the cost of the boiler and wouldn't be powerfull enough to run all the rads. It would only heat the hot water and 1 rad.

Yes you could run the oil or a back boiler stove and each would heat the house on their own.

In your situation a flat topped stove with boiler would be suitable and look best in the kitchen and be cheaper than the kitchener.

If you measure the rads I will see what would suit:)

The boiler stove would plumb straight into the position of the oil boiler range so fitting would be pretty simple and just buy a open vented oil boiler located indoors somewhere.
