    Hi all,

I have being cycling for about 6 months now using a Felt F95.
I think I have caught the bug of cycling, therefore I have bought a Frame.

The Frame is a 2008 Ridley Noah, I'm looking to see what the best stuff to put on it e.g Groupset, Saddle, Wheels, Stem and handlebars.

I would like to do some racing next year, I have attached a picture of the frame.

    Thanks

    Shane

Another 1200 euro and that bike will pop !!

    Savage colour scheme

Yes there is a seatcap, the budget is around €800 to €1000, sorry i should of stated that.

I was thinking of the Sram Force Groupset.....with carbon wheels from China.

This is why I need some help on it....

id go planet x rims on novatec hubs on pillar spokes, that would keep costs down about 400 all in
Your cutting it close for groupset money and bars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,718 ✭✭✭AstraMonti

1000 is a very tight budget if you go for sram force and wheels. You need to account for bar/stem/tape/pedals/tyres/tubes/seatpost/saddle and i might be forgetting something. Are you planning to transfer stuff from the old bike?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,796 ✭✭✭CptMackey

I'm changing my group set and wheels next year. It's looking like it will cost close to 1000 quid. I'm only looking at SRAM rival or 105. I'm not looking at top of the range wheels either.

Go to a few lbs and get quotes for every thing you need, then see where you stand on the net

mmmmmmm, I hear where you's are coming from....what is the most important, Groupset or Wheels or both.......I have the pedels from my other bike but I'm trying to sell it to fund the build of this one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

Wheels imo are the best to spend the money on. Gonna be fairly tough to get a gruppo, wheels and finishing kit under a grand. Do-able though.
Do a bit of trawling and you should be able to get a Veloce 2010 gruppo for a couple of hundred. A great gruppo for the money.

Beautiful frame BTW and beautiful frames DEMAND Campy !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭Casati

I'd buy a 105 group set rather than Rival, and get a set of cheap Shimano or Mavic wheel sets for about 250 which you could use long term as a second set of wheels. If funds allowed, getting Ultegra hubs builds on Sup rims would be a great choice

When funds allow go carbon and get something reasonably decent rather than the cheapest Chinese no brand carbon which will serve only to break your heart when you need a spoke or cassette body changed

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

    here you go
With a bit of hard haggling with postage etc you will have
a full Veloce gruppo with finishing kit and a nice frame to sell on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Rita1

So I should go for a mid range groupset (Veloce, 105, Rival) and spend a bit more on the wheels & tyres.......would you advise 34/50 or 39/53 crank, I'm in Donegal here so there's a few hills about.

Yes, IMO. Wheels and tyres should give you a greater performance boost and nice wheels will look good with that lovely frame.

Depends on the rider but I raced on a compact last year and didn't feel I lost out to any major extent. It's probably a better all round solution if you are also getting rid of your current bike. On the other hand, if you are building an out-and-out race bike and will have something else available for all-round use, maybe go with the standard double.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Rita1

That's great advise, Its funny I was going down the expensive groupset and skimp on the rest.....but I will concentrate on the wheels...... I think I will go for the 34/50 with 175mm arm......thanks again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,222 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

The Noah is a pretty serious frame.

If this is going to be your dedicated race bike then I'd go with a standard double.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

With Lumen. I know people have raced on Compact cranks but the is a serious piece of kit and you would be better off with a standard.

    Re gruppo's
The only real difference between the mid range and top of the range is maybe a bit of carbon and a few grams of weight (plus the snobbery of having a high end gruppo)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Paul Kiernan

With all due respect to velo.2010;), I think the best price for 105 5700 is €427 delivered from here. The new 5700 is such a good groupset it's hard to see why anyone would bother with Ultegra.

I got these wheels on Ebay recently for just over £200 with the carbon laminate rims and would have thought they'd be excellent for racing as they've Ultegra hubs and very light rims. I don't race, BTW, I bought them for the comfort:).

I will be building up a very nice frame shortly and will be putting a standard on it. I will be hanging on to the compact-equipped bike for training, winter stuff, the odd sportive and the like. If I only had one bike, I think I'd go with a compact. But if my only bike was a Noah, I might feel differently ;) .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Rita1

Yes I think I'm swaying towards the 105 groupset, If I want for the standard would a 11-28 cassette help on the hills, I live up a hill which climbs 1000ft in 1.5 miles.... Mavic SL wheels and 105's could be the option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

A friend of mine got these carbon wheels from China last week, delivery was something like 10 working days I think.

If you are going for a standard then I think the 11 sprocket might be a bit of a waste, only the pro's push that big a gear !! but the 28 sprocket would be very hand on that hill ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Rita1

Thanks for that, I didn't think of that about the 11 sprocket, I will look out for 12-28 cassette.....is your mate happy with the wheels they got ?

    Where I'm at now,

    105 groupset
    Mavic SL wheels

Anyone suggestions on saddle and bars ?

Thanks for everything so far folks

    Shane

Good stuff, there are alot of options out there....
    105 5700 is €427 delivered from here
this seems like a good deal....
What does it mean buy braze on or clamp?

I the fulcrum 3 a good wheel for what i'm looking for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,718 ✭✭✭AstraMonti

You need a braze on for the Noah, it's how the front derailleur is attached to the frame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

    Rita1 wrote: »

front mech mounting, your frame seems to have a braze on mount looking at the pic (theres a metal bracket above where the chainset goes)

are you in donegal ? give me a shout if you're near donegal town (loads of tools etc lying around (although you pretty much only need a set of allen keys)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Rita1

Thanks for that AstraMonti, these are probably very silly question to you guys.

Yes I'm in Donegal, living in Burnfoot originally for Ballybofey, thanks for the help.

just make sure you dont over torque the carbon bits when pputting it together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Rita1

Yea that's grand, seen that your from Donegal, what do you think about the crank size 34/50 or 39/53 with 12-28 cassette?

and i do fancy these wheels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

me i ride a 12 27 and a triple :o but i think the only place ive used it recently is on glengesh, if your planning on racing then you'll want the 39/53. most of he guys ive seen have a compact except on the raceday bike (if you ride the ballyholey circuit you prob wouldnt get out of the 53.

but seeing as i dont race i'd go for the 34/50

yep fulcrums are fine, might want some deeper sections as funds allow, but i ride mavic ksyrium sl's and love em, great for climbs and hilly circuits but youd want something more aero for fast and flat but thats $$$$$$$$$$

Yea I was looking at the mavic ksyrium sl's, the bike is not only for racing.... I'm going the inishown 100 and Mizen to Malin next year so I may not need deep sections

I would prefer these wheels: http://www.shinybikes.com/Campagnolo-Zonda-Wheels-Black-Clincher-Pair.html and they have them for a very good price. Weight should be around the 1500g for the set.

Nice wheels allright, now for the next Silly question, when I look at wheels so is clincher or tubular, what is the difference ?

Shimano wheels are well priced on Bike24. RS80 50mm carbon Clinchers are e599. Purely for the flat roads though.

    Ultegra 6700 wheels (1650g) are e249 a pair.

    clinchers

tubular tyres have a tube sewn into the tyre and then glued to the rim, clinchers have abead and seperate inner tube (which is easier to replace at the side of the road)
