I've got some reservations about being audited. Just wondering how long it is before you are "off the hook" or so to speak. I've read that the revenue expect you to keep your records for 6 years. Does that mean that in 2013, I definitely won't be audited for before 2007 ? Any advice is welcome thanks

What do you mean you've got "reservations", guilty conscience?! :p

It's not that Revenue expect anything, so much as you are legally obliged to keep your records for the required 6 year period.

In general it would be unusual to be audited for a period going back more than a couple of years. Like if you were audited in 2012 it would most likely be for 2010, or 2009 & 2010. Unless they have seen a smoking gun, something really obvious, to indicate that you owe money from an earlier year...

ive been through this before in relation to medical expenses. they sent out a letter asking for proof to support claims for x and y years. i sent them the proof. they sent the receipts back with an "all ok" letter.

    nothing to it really.

That's not a Revenue audit though, that's just an "assurance check" (http://www.revenue.ie/en/practitioner/audit-code-of-practice/non-audit-interventions.html).

An audit would be a bit more involved...
