iOS 5.1 beta hints at iPhone 5/iPad 3

    From macrumours:

"iOS 5.1 Beta seems to be a treasure trove of product ids with the exposure of the iPad 2,4 and the J33 codename for the next generation Apple TV. The latest part number to come from iOS 5.1 is the iPhone 5,1 as noted by both @FilippoBiga and 9to5Mac.

The progression of iPhone product numbers are as follows:

    iPhone1,1 - Original iPhone
    iPhone1,2 - iPhone 3G
    iPhone2,1 - iPhone 3GS
    iPhone3,1 - iPhone 4
    iPhone4,1 - iPhone 4S

iPhone5,1 clearly represents the next generation iPhone that Apple is working on. Rumors have suggested the next iPhone will carry a 4" screen rather than the usual 3.5" screen found in all previous iPhone models. The new iPhone is also believed to have been prototyped with a tapering design in the past, though the most recent rumors suggest the actual release iPhone will not resemble the mockups.

The iPad3,2 reference has been previously seen though iPad3,3 appears new."

No surprise really... But will the 5 be summer or autumn launched?

Could be an indicator of a move by Apple towards having shorter release times and a greater range of phones on the market at any one time to compete with the way that Samsung and HTC are operating in the smartphone market by having entirely different models on the market rather than just variations on the one model.

In much the same way that you have 4 different iPod models that are vastly different, as opposed to the 2 mostly-the-same iPhone models on the market.

I was surprised when they moved away from the numbering system with the 4S (considering they "reset" it with the 3S), but perhaps their plan is for the iPhone 5 (6) to have some kind of name like the iPhone Pro or whatever rather than a number. Or maybe it's simpler than that and as we can see from the model versions, the 3G wasn't a big change from the 2G, so it was really the iPhone 1.5 and the next one is the iPhone 5.

Yeah - and what a damp squib that turned out to be.

Some of us are holding out for a bit more or a refresh.

Well I upgraded from the 3GS and found it a huge step up in terms of speed, features, performance, battery and design.

Not everyone upgrades with every model you know.
