    hello all,

I registered at the unemployment office almost 6 weeks ago. At that time, the social welfare professional who was looking after my unemployment registration told me that I would be receiving notice of when I had to sign on next. I still have not received any notice regarding a date to sign on. i really do not want to get struck off and it is next to impossible to get in touch with the unemployment office over the phone. I was wondering if this length of time (almost 6 weeks) is normal?..I was told that it is meant to be once a month. cheers

You should call back to the Social Welfare office and check on the progress of your application and let them know you did not receive any notice of a signing date. It is very common for the phones not be answered and it is best that you call there in person anyway.

While you are waiting for your claim to be processed, you may be able to get Supplementary Welfare Allowance from the Community Welfare Officer (who is now more correctly known as 'the Department of Social Protection's representative' ) who works out of your local HSE health centre.
