They are due every 80,000 miles or 5 years and a full timing belt kit with water pump should be in the region of €350 supplied and fitted.

In fainess, I doubt a '98 106 is even worth the cost of replacing the TB. Just keep drivin till she pops. I have a 99 punto with 200,000 on the clock and the intervals are 40,000 but it's overdue by 35000 or so. Still not gone and if it does, meh. It's only a ball of dirt banger anyway so nothing lost. Spending big money maintaining old crocks is a waste of time my friend. I used to be very dilligent with maintaining it but it is now at the stage where even basic maintenance costs will ecxeed the market value of the car - whats the point.
Even a basic service such as oil change, plugs and air filter costs about 100 euro all in and sure the cars probably worth 150. No more services for this car - i'm now going to drive it on till it stops, then replace.

I don't even know what to say to that apart maybe that maintenance is as much about safety as reliability.

Some people actually like their cars and a 106 GTI is not quite the same as a basic 106 or punto.

thanks just the info i was needing. As for the mastermind above, try google it, maybe its my fone but i couldnt get a definitive answer like above. As for not servicing your car, people like that cant afford a car and should be on the bus. A 106 gti isnt exactley a ball of crap.
