    hi all,

posting here about an engine prob on my brothers 00 Corolla 1.4 vvti 135k miles on the clock.

this one suffers from burning oil syndrome burns 0.75L in 1000miles.

engine seems to be down on power at low revs <2000. and all of a sudden it seems to have lots of power between 2-3000revs. slow to pick up until it reaches the 2k revs, it then seems like it has a turbo and away it goes

this only happens under load, it will rev away fine when parked

any ideas other than air and fuel filters? must change them first before investigating further

    all the best

I doubt its the fuel filter, I changed one and cut the old one open to see how bad it was. It was like new!
The air filter needs changing regularly though, start with a new one and see how it reacts.
Burning oil is not a big problem, Toyota manuals state that they can use up to 1l per 1000km as normal.
Sounds a bit like the VVTI is not working correctly, maybe the actuator needs to be checked.

The maf (airflow sensor) is common enough to go on those.
Run a check for codes on it

would it be flashing a redlight "see yout toyota dealer" if this was the way or will a mechanic who has a diagnostics machine be able to figure it out if he plugs it in

It would generally through a service light. Any diagnostic tool will read the codes.

Its 00, so it wont be eobd. Standard diag. tools wont read it. You can get flash codes though.
MAF doesn't always set a fault code. Might be worth disconnecting the MAF, and driving it to see if it makes a difference.
