2008 Diesel GT Golf - 140 or 170BHP?

So I have decided to buy a Golf and the diesel GT model is the one i'm going to for.

The two cars the 140 and 170 seem to be very similar except the 170 has a bigger turbo and a few other little differences I think.

The 170 is harder to find as in there is less of them around plus there is meant to be more lag in the 170.

    Plenty of the 140's.

My thinking was that to get the 140 and get it remapped up to 170.

I would be informing my insurance company of this.

What are all your views on this?

    Why bother?
just get the 170 and remap that to 215 or so

We have that same engine in our Yeti and I can't say I've noticed any lag issue.

Once your in the right gear only a small amount of throttle pressure is needed for turbo to kick-in.

Try both if possible, if price is much of a muchness go for the 170, it performs quite well, has a descent sound (for a diesel) and economy is good.

"Meant to be more lag"? Are you saying the "lag" is deliberate, or you're basing this on hearsay?

As the other poster stated, why chip a 140hp to 170hop, when you can get a 170hp? Chip a 140 and you'll end up reducing the reliability of the car. Do you honestly expect all the components in a 140 to suffer no reliability problems if you chip it? VW owners have been chipping their cars for years and ripping transmissions all over the place.
Come to sale time you will get someone to buy a "normal" 170 off you, but will struggle to sell a "chipped" 170.

If the turbo lag is annoying, you can get that remapped to smooth out the power curve.

I would be weary buying a 2 litre PD engine. They give injector trouble which can be costly but not only that the symptoms can be dangerous. The car can cut out at an inopportune moment.
