What is a good second car?

Hi guys, Me and the missus has decided to get a second car, the first is a 04 D4D Avensis so a small 1.0-1.4 petrol 2000-2004 would be ideal (low tax). I have been looking for a few days now and I'm basically dizzy at this stage and just need a few opinions. I was looking at Yaris, Ibiza, Polo and the likes. 5dr is important due to us having a 3 year old and it would be handy to have back doors. Budget is up to €1650. Thanks in advance.

Yaris' are roomy and they are pretty reliable IMO.

Yea, Biscuits16 a Yaris is more like what I'm looking for and thanks bazz26 but I'm not too gone on them cars, but thanks for the suggestions, can't believe you can get them at tat price!
I have a shortlist of about 10 cars, mostly comprising of Polo's the odd Yaris which is very expensive in comparison to its peers and Ibiza's. All fairly reliable and look ok! Just want to see if anyone can come up with something I have missed that could also be a contender that I have missed, draw on your experiences!

Micra and yaris and Honda jazz from the years you mention(micra up to 02, jazz from 01) will be the most trouble free by far, followed closely by the old model polo(up to 02) IMO

OP, Ive an 04 Almera 1.5 h/b as a second car and while its a tad boring, its certainly very reliable. It never fails to start even throughout the cold spell last year. Ok it ain't everyones cup of tea (and maybe not yours OP) but I use it for getting in and out to work (35 miles round trip) and its never let me down.

Cheers man, but a 1.3 is about the highest I'd go! Taxing a 2.0 + 1.5 might just be too much! But thanks anyway and best of luck selling her!

You shouldn't discount the 1.5litre... its only €24 more a year than a 1.301ltire... or €47 a year more than 1.201-1.3litre

Yea man, but I've set my limit. I've talked my insurance to throw on the second car for €210, as long as its < 1.4 and worth less than €1500. there's a reason for everything

The Ibiza is a Polo, so same opinion, old model Ibiza up to 02 is a much more trouble free car then the new models with the VAG 3 cylinder engines.
