I've no first hand experience, but a good friend of mine is just back (Saturday) from his umpteenth trip to Poland. He goes a couple of times throughout the year at different times for deer, boar, etc.

They provide him with rifle (usually 30-06), guide, food, accomodation, etc. I asked him before about cost, and he says the trip is 7 days, averaging about €100 - €125 per day. Seems fairly resonable compared to the larger Safari type outings i've spoken to others about. Food is cheap, drink is for nothing, and he offers the guide €10 per day as a tip, and its gratefully accepted each time.

Next time i'm tlking to him i'll ask for details, more specific ones anyway, and a location. Each time he tells me about it, it seems more and more attractive. Maybe someday.

Hungary is pretty good too,if you want to shoot pheasents, deer and boar.
Been three times there ,once when it was still under Communist rule for deer hunting, and twice ,this year and last year for pheasent hunting.
Hear good reports about Croatia too for boar, but can be pricey .

I think that value/money for boar the best place is Hungary. They have a lot of them and since they dont use Euro (they are in EU!!!) prices are low.

Second choice would be Croatia which has nice nature (hills and mountains) but prices are higher. Food and accommodation is better and normally more expensive.

Don't have much experience in other countries in the east.

I would however say that if you can afford it you should try at least once in your life hunting in the alps (Austria or Slovenia) on Chamois or Ibex. Nothing comes close to this experience.

I,ve been a guest in Germany,Denmark,Sweden and Norway so I cant comment on value for money in those countries.

In all of them though I have appreciated the traditions of the hunt.

I have coughed up my shekels to hunt boar in Latvia,Sweden and Hungary.

Hungary would get my vote. The guides/ghillies/outfitters are professionals. They are in college for 2 years to get a job as a ghillie.

The country has a long tradition of hunting. Visit the hunting museum in Budapest to see an amazing collection of trophies, old weapons and artifacts.

Value for money ? Difficult to equate. If an offer of a hunt is cheap there has to be a reason. If you are going boar shooting from high seats at night in the summer its a cheap trip but the chances are low as the boar have lots of alternative food sources.

Still a few of us went 2 years ago and got 6 over a weekend and a couple of Roe bucks. I,ve also been over and we only got one or 2 between us,thats hunting.

Hunting for trophies there is expensive, read eyewatering. But if you have your heart set on a trophy mouflon or boar you,ll get a good one.Or you set the size of trophy you are prepared to pay for its the guides job to assess the trophy before you shoot. Get a bigger one its his loss.

Stalking boar in the snow following their tracks to their bedding areas is a blast. And they do snore !!

Driven boars hunts there are IMHO the ultimate. I,ve been twice so far and the first was reasonable but we had very little experience of shooting at running animals with scoped rifles and it isn,t easy. Some guys just couldnt take the shots, some didnt see anything, some shot several boar. The second was brilliant ! 45 animals in 2 days and they were shot several more times in the bar of the hotel afterwards

Food and drink are very reasonable there especially since they have devalued the forint by 15% in the last couple of months.

I,ve used this outfitter www.nagyvadhunting.hu for the last 5 years. As far as I can work out he hasn,t been screwing us and most importantly the price you see on his website is the price you pay.
