I had a new one of these in 1984, they were a really good diesel, similar engine to the 1.9 bx. There was a load of 305 vans around at the time. Like many other cars I haven't seen one driving in years. Last time was in France. Anyone know of any still moving

Great lower mid market car (seriously) fantastic subtle suspension though the seats are also rather squishy.

I've seen two on the road this year, and i know i saw one lying up in a farmyard but can't remember where it was, I get around to all sorts of places so sometimes it can be hard to remember

My uncle had a number of them between 1984 - 1991(?) I believe the Citroen BX van was meant to be the replacement. I'll never forget the comfort ... it had just about the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. It had a decent bit of power on tap with the 1.9L engine.

I always thought it was a very handsome van, and whoever decided to kill it off in favour of the weirdo BX (I like the BX but the van is sick imho) must've been on the magic mushies.

8121 KI ... that was one of his early ones :pac:

The 309 was the replacement for the 305, and i would say there is even less of them around. Remember this was the age of the 205 and 405 as well.
From a van point of view there was and is nothing to touch the 305, super engine 300,000miles easy, long load space, super supension and the front seats were just something else !
Anyone changing from a 305 van back then had a tuff choice if they wanted a car/van and the length, only thing out there was i think the nissan sunny van.
Ok citroen had the BX but a lot of people were afraid of the hydraulic suspension.
Remember this was van time in Ireland.
There were the Renualts the Super 5, the 11 and the Super 19. VW had the golf and transporter.
Ford had the transit, feista, but had they an escort van at that time ? Toyota had the hiace and litace later came the corolla van. Opel i can't think??
Mercedes had the 208,308 4,5, and the rest, but nothing small.
Nissian had the vanette, urvan and the sunny.

What were An Post running around in then 88/89? renault what's ? what was before the kangoo ? I think i found it an "Extra" or was this a later name ? (renault 5 with a hump)

There was a 305 van around here a 1991 reg it must have been one of the last. The only thing peugeot done wrong was to fit a cav pump to the later engines from 1989 on which left them underpowered.

I had a 1985 305 1905cc, bosch pump, 4 speed van, and boy it was a super tool, and they had real bumpers none of these plastic things ! jesus they would bounce of a wall and there would'nt be a mark in them.
I changed to a 1989 205 1769cc, cav pump, 5 speed and the 305 would leave it for dead. (no it was nothing to do with the difference between the 4 and 5 speed)
The 205 just had no get up and go, no pulling power.

I often wonder what the 305 van with a turbo 1905 cc engine would have been like ??? (turbo's were new to small diesels in them times)

It would have been the fastest diesel in the world!

There's still a Citroen BX van working for a living in Tralee. Must be almost unique now?

Petrol engine on that one for sale and on many that are still hanging around. The diesel was a brilliant engine, petrol not so good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭mamakevf

Early petrol 305's had a weird fanbelt set-up. The engine is transverse and the fanbelt ran off the crank pulley round the side of the engine via pulleys to the fan on the radiator.
No fancy electrics in them days son.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭Caddyvanman

The diesel had 2 V belts, one V belt ran of the crank to drive the alt, and the other ran of the end of the camshaft on the other end of the engine (flywheel end) and drove the vacuum pump for the brake servo and also the heater controls. In the 305's the heater flaps were worked by little vacuum diaphragms.
Later diesels done away with The V belt, they had a different vacuum pump which was bolted onto the end of the head having a direct drive of the camshaft.

The 1.9 diesel was the XUD engine, it survived in various guises up until the (fairly) recent HDi...

In late '96/early '97 it changed to the electronic/emissions pump.

I had a '96 pre emissions ZX Volcane, it was nicknamed the Squid...

When you floored it, it over fuelled to keep everything cool, result was a black cloud out the rear. :D

The ZX Volcane drove like a cross between a mini and an Alfasud, a real drivers car. 90 bhp was a lot back then...

    Happy Days :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭Caddyvanman

A friend of mine had 1994 new ZX Volcane, holy smoke what a yoke to go, lower, stiffer and bucket seats what more would you want, oh yea the oval exhaust tail pipe.
I remember driving it once (on private road) doing 115mph and still had a lot more of pedal travel left.
Is that all they had 90 bhp ? felt like a lot more.

The first runabout I had was a 305 Diesel van.. It had 270k miles on it and still went well... It was red

The glow plug timer messed up so we just wired in a relay and a pushbutton on the dash to energise the heater plugs.. You gave it "5 Elephants" on a cold morning and 2 during the day...! :D

I accidently put home heating oil in it once (long story) and we had to put 2 bottles of Crisp n Dry in it to compensate... Smokey and dead but it done the old girl no harm;)

I know a chap who has 3 of them, one still in daily use until earlier this year !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭shawnee

Were they vans or cars ? See there's a clean looking 305 van for sale on the donedeal , most of the vans were diesel but it usually had a d on the back , don't see anyone on the one for sale. Wonder if there is a 305 diesel car still being used daily in Ireland ? Saw a few in France , but then the Celtic Tiger and the scrappage scheme didn't roar as loud in that poor country :D:p

I own a 305 turbo van that i use daily. Nothing to show what it is. Street sleeper style. 55mpg, top speed 95mph. Surprises a lot of bods with more modern plastic piles thats for sure. Especialy the twat in an Audi that banged into the back of me at a roundabout a few weeks ago. Steel bumper and tow hook v audi plastic front. Ho ho ho. my tits nearly fell off from laughing.

Hopefully I will have my 505 & R20 at Durrow.

I would love one. Quirky French style, quick for an old school diesel and pretty economical, bombproof mechanicals, suspension and seats that make short work of even the worst of Irish road and practical spacious.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead ................
But if anyone is interested, I have just finished restoring one. It's a one owner from new van originally bought by the Ulster Milk Marketing Board in 1988, reregistered to the same address when they were renamed the Ulster Farmers Association in 1995, was kept as a spare until 2002 when it was parked in a shed.
    Totally restored, lovely thing.

    It's for sale here: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/4311211

I'm looking for a usable 80's-90's diesel car based commercial myself for work but they are usually fairly ragged or overpriced.

Fair point, but in my defense, you simply cannot get parts for the 305 anymore. I spent three years hunting through every scrapyard I could find, following up internet leads and stopping at every wreck filling a gap in a mans farmyard to find what I needed to leave this one right. It still has the original plastic wheel trims for the wheels, but I think I'll be letting them go along with the van rather than on it as I have a set of alloy wheels here off a Peugeot 205 1.6 gti. The phone is a nice touch, I'm told that it could still be useable but that's a bit beyond me.

I may be wrong but I think the 309 was actually brought out as the replacement for the Talbot Horizon (when did you last see one of those?). LHD production of the 305 saloon and estate continued after they stopped sending them to us in RHD form and the direct replacement for the 305 was the 306 Sedan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭shawnee

Would have thought the 405 replaced the 305 , 309 was only mid sized escort type car ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 523 ✭✭✭piston

Definitely to replace the Talbot Horizon and it was originally supposed to be called the Talbot Arizona. I've just checked it up in - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_309
