i'd go for something like a 2006 Focus hatchback, 1.6 diesel

An Opel Astra with the 1.3CDTI or the 1.7CDTI engine is an option too? Plenty around on DD except that many of them are imports from the UK..

is there something wrong with them from UK?

    Thought spec would be better

Nothing wrong with then and usually the spec is better than here just be wary that mileage clocking is popular in the UK so try and verify the mileage before committing.

vauxhalls never make as much here. id get something like this http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2613390
    its a very economical 1.8

    this http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2760851

    or this http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2682423

i apologies that theyre all above 1.6 but the 1.8s are economical in them as theyre pretty new units. both 140bhp

I think I'd be leaning towards a Corolla 1.4 d4d in 90bhp guise. Surprisignly quicker than its small capacity diesel engine might seem to suggest. I would guess you will pay a wee bit of a premium for the Corolla over the Focus but arguably worth it.

Any good reason why you are limiting yourself to 1.6? Because if you extend your limits to 2.0, it will give you a lot more choise.

    Cheaper tax i was thinking.

Also would smaller engine mean it would use less diesel? or is it not as simple as that?

it would use less if the weight of the car matched the engine size. a corolla 1.4 d4d would be fine. if youre doing alot of motorway or driving it hard though a smaller engine will burn more

How many miles do you do a year?
What are you looking for in a car? I mean what's most important for you - Reliability, performance, looks, running and servising costs, image etc..

Tis' indeed, only thing that'd really turn me off is the 1.4 engine

300 miles a week still doesn't mean you have to get a diesel.

Why do you want to spend that much money?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2731362
    Full?id=8766122

This will do 74 mpg with Dipetane added.
Will last for 600000 miles easy if serviced properly.
And only half of you budget.
Oh yes, it is a diesel

Nothing wrong with them at all. They are lively enough with 122bhp.

interesting thread, i'm in the same boat as the OP, thinking of changing next year, budget around 8-10k max.

i do about 8500 miles a year approx, almost all urban driving with the occasional trip on the motorway to cork.

i'm aware of the high servicing costs that can be associated with a diesel, but then again i'm spending about 120 euro a month on petrol now, i have a soon to be 10 yeat old passat 1.6 petrol.

i'm leaning towards a focus diesel, but was wondering do all diesels nowadays come with this diesel particulate filter? and does one need to be doing a lot of driving in order to clear this filter effectively?

thanks for any tips and keep the links to all cars, petrol or diesel coming.

Tax on a 1.9 is something like €580

    But a 1.4 around €333

    Bit of a difference
