Can anyone recommend a basic tool that can do the following:
    - Convert colored Transparent PNGs to grey scaled versions for use as Icons
    - Handle batches of images at a time
    - Would be nice if it worked on a Mac as well

    Thanks.

Photoshop actions would be best for this me thinks.

Irfanview would do the job and it seems like you can get it working on a mac

    In the world of FOSS
    ImageMagik
is pretty much the defacto standard for this type of thing (specifically with command line & automation abilities).

Unless you are already a Photoshop guru - GIMP is a great FOSS alternative.
