Orient Mako

I've done a complete U-turn on my opinion of dive watches recently (thanks Mitch Buchannon) This watch lark is addictive :eek:

I wanted to give an entry level dive watch a go and it appears the Orient Mako is the best bang for buck.

Anyone suggest a good place online to buy or alternatives worth looking at?

I would also look at the Seiko divers. A lot of bang for your buck there too. Check out the monster / 007 / 009 for nice options. (again good prices found on creationwatches)

Hard to say ...I have never seen a Mako in person, so it's difficult to judge.

I do have the Reef and its build quality and finish is way better than the price suggests, it does have a few drawbacks though.

QC in Vostok is a bit hit and miss and it may happen that you will have to have a quick go under the hood to adjust regulation or tighten the rotor screw ...no biggy, but it does happen.

The date adjustment is not quickset, which can be a pain when you don't keep the watch wound / don't wear it regularly ...but at least it's handwind also (which the Mako isn't) which makes keeping it wound easier.

I do have another Orient with the same movment as the Mako and besides the fact that it doesn't handwind there is one more thing that annoys me about it and that is that the rotor is very noisy ..you can hear and feel it going round which isn't the case with any of my other autos.


Other than that it's probably down to taste

In that case the Mako's more "classic" lines would suit me. The reef appears more sporty or "jazzy" as I like to say. Thanks for input.

Yepp ...you could get away with a Mako in a suit (just) ...but not with the Reef, certainly not the yellow/orange version

wow that black one on the leather strap is delish..ahh cr*p..now I'm confused. any sites that are selling the black one? sorry I'm such a newbie :rolleyes:

Smirs is the only one without any comment next to their listing http://smirs.com/vostok-amphibia-watches/ , but that doesn't mean that they have it in stock either, you'd need to ask

Recently got a Seiko SKX007 and very happy with. Maybe a little more expensive than the Orients but serious watch and quality makes it great value.
