Berlin advice

Going to Berlin with 6 friends in for 4 days in Feb and need some advice I need to know where to stay (somewhere central and safe)? did a bit of research but the city is so vast and got confused by it all. Basically looking to do all the sights by day and eat, drink and party at night So somewhere close to transport and not too quiet/industrial or far away would be ideal. Also if anyone knows of any good bars, accommodation shopping areas would be grateful. Accommodation wise thinking of a 3* or self catering apt.

What sort of stuff are you into doing (under the above headings)? Berlin is a very decentralised city and each district (Pl.Berg, F.hain, Mitte, etc.) are rather different.

Defo interested in the history so the sights - museums, buildings monuments are a must. Enjoy nice cafes/restaurants/bars nothing mad posh a bit quirky/retro I guess.
As we only have a few days we are limited cos its such a big city but I want to make the most of my time there. A bit of shopping would be good too high street mixed in with retro areas - vintage clothes, book, arty shops,
