    Burying them. Sounds odd. Pity.

I think there was mention of Asbestos in some of the aircraft panels so it was the safest way to dispose of them.

why not just safely dispose of the asbestos?

It would cost more than the scrap value of the aircraft to safely remove the asbestos...thats why they are burying them instead..

    As westdub says above.

if you watch the video it says the recycling the asbestos would cost double the cost of burial disposal.

23 being buried and 7 kept for museums.

Just the other week, they passed the whole carbon tax scam into law and now they are burying the goverment jets! In the words of Alf Stewart," STRIKE THE FLAMIN CROWS"

So what happens when they corrode and disintegrate in the soil? Won't the asbestos get into the water table over time? Or is it even an issue?

Asbestos dust is the real killer! It clogs up the lungs and can cause the big C....When asbestos is being removed from old roofs etc.its sprayed with water to keep down the dust before being wrapped in plastic for disposal..

IIRC from my wine making days filters containing asbestos were used to clear/polish the said concoction before being bottled..Still around!!

Disposal is a costly process, remember a fairly recent and unfortunate aircraft fire which had asbestos in the fireproof bulkhead..

I would guess they have sealed them somehow. The TV report mentioned 'bound asbestos', I assume this means it is combined with another material in the wings/fuselage.

Or the Aussies may be thinking that this is a problem for another generation to worry about..........
