That is a Freesat NOT a Freeview receiver/recorder.
It will work here for Freesat, provided you have a satellite dish. See http://www.freesat.co.uk/ for stations and details.

Unless you are near the border area or parts of the SE you will not get Freeview here as it is terrestrial uk tv received on an aerial similar to Irish Saorview.

I'll will work for recording the satellite channels you will receive - I heard the Samsung had some horrible software issues initially - hopefully they have been resolved.

    Yeah it will work ok.

But, (always a but...), do not expect to get the same channels as you do on Sky, see list on Freesat site, you will only get those. Saying that, there are a few more due next month.

If you want to get Saorview on you tv, you will have to fit an aerial.

You can get a combiner that allows you to combine and split, (you need 2) your satellite and aerial signal down one cable, so if house is already plumbed for tv's, all you would need to do is fit an aerial beside dish and then it should be easy enough.

The Humax remains the machine to beat - through the Samsung might have sorted out its issues.

I have been keeping an eye on this box for a while. It had a raft of serious issues when it came out first. Software updates seem to have cured most of the issues. However the reviews are still very hit and miss.

Most seem to agree that the picture output is excellent, and that the interface is more modern that the popular Humax HDR. However the Humax is more flexible when it comes to playing around with recordings and settings, even to the extent of tinkering with the software.

For a basic Sky+ replacement box then the Samsung should be a good choice if it works properly, but there are still a lot of negative reviews coming in.

I have this box, and have to say I'm delighted with it. I was put off the humax by its very dated interface and long load times for the epg. I haven't had any trouble at all with this box,i just loaded up the most recent software straight away and it's been flawless.

You can record all the non-freesat fta channels also. good choice, how much were they selling it for on black friday?

Down to £150, for a few seconds.

Don't know about the Samsung, princemuzzy, except, as others said, initially it had software issues and was only released when I was looking so I went for the Humax Foxsat HDR at about €240 delivered from an e-bayer.

All I can say I have no regrets or problems with the box. The main problem people talk about is the slowness of the EPG loading, but there is a work around that I do not have a problem with.

I have a humax hdr for a month now which i bought in Amazon.Surperb pic on HD and SD.An older relative needed a freesat box so i bought the 'What Hi-fi' 'freesat box of the year' for its ease of use the SAMSUNG SMT-S7800.Sure the ease of use was excellent, set up was painless and it even downloaded new
    software (took 10-15 mins)

But what about the pic? Well i was very disappointed. There was a slight loss of detail both in HD and SD and also the skin pigment was off a little giving gaudy colours compared to the Humax hdr. After about an hour of this, I boxed up the Samsung for return. I have now ordered another humax hdr.

Since the last software update, the Humax Foxsat HDR loads the EPG very fast compared to before. It is a great box. Only fault is that it cannot record from Saorview, or from any external source. Pity.

Also, you can't copy any file/recording over 4GB onto an external hard drive, which is a bit of a pain in the arse. Any high def programme of a medium duration will be over 4GB in size.

You can if you format the external drive as Ext3. Copy away then no matter the file size.

After reading several fora, I cancelled purchase of the Sammy from Amazon this evening. Even though many of the software issues appear to have been ironed out since launch, it still seems to be a lottery as to whether the unit that lands on your doorstep behaves as it should.

Also worth noting only 25% of the allocated stock had been nabbed by the time the deal expired. It will possibly make an appearance as a 'lightning deal' again this week.

If the unit has the latest software version then it should generally be ok.

If it doesn't have it, you can force it to download the latest version when you start using it, which should in theory sort things out.

If I saw it again at £149 I'd snap one up.

Keep an eye on their deals this week Niman, a reappearance may well be on the cards.

Having recently gone through the hassle of returning a TV to the UK, I wanted to be fairly sure the Samsung would not end up requiring similar treatment but the more I read, the less confident of that I became. Even after updating to latest firmware at set-up, too high a number of folks are still reporting the unit as overly buggy.

I think the products reputation took a pummelling post launch which lingers on and it wouldn't surprise me if it's significantly discounted to shift units in the new year.

Can a recoder that is designed for Freesat be used to record on FTA channels on a Sky SD Digibox? If so, where can I get instructions on how to make sure it works?

I just bought one for my father here in the west of Ireland - we are getting all the free to air channels that we would get with a silvercrest sat receiver which we had before, plus the HD channels - setup is very easy - groups channels from the word go - the system does ask for a postcode but one does not have to enter one - I did enter a Northern Ireland postcode and this brought UTV to the list - gone back to no postcode (ran a restore factory setting) and I now see Channel 4 HD but it could have been in the other list also - ... Picture Quality is good - software slightly slow to respond and programme list is slower to load than a Sky box but for a once off payment I feel it is very good value - I suspect things will improve with the software updates - I see in the future it will be able to connect to the net by wifi ...... and it plays xvid files ......

    just spotted this
