Anyone know if there is much of a difference between the 2 variants (diesel). Mainly Motorway driving, 2 hours per day. I can't get a 2.0 to test drive in a Motorway area.

Both will cruise on a motorway no problem but the extra torque of the 2.0 litre will make overtaking easier and the journey more relaxing, it will probably return similar if not better fuel economy as the 1.6 as it is under less stress.

for motorway is better bigger engine, overtaking is much safe, you have reserve on power to escape from dangerous situation, 2.0 have more power and need less diesel on motorway, 1.6 is weaker and need more diesel to pull heavy car. On city better is smaller engine, like 1.6, because many time you spend on heavy traffic, start and stop on any cross and lights, use 1 and 2 gear on rush hours and 1.6 take less diesel like 2.0 in city.

The 1.6TDCI & Mondeo is a fairly new combo. I haven't driven one yet.

However that engine in a Focus is very decent, and I know it's featured in some big cars (S80) and does ok.

The 2.0 will be better but the 1.6 might well be up to it.

Thanks for the replies, didn't realise 2.0 may be more efficient than 1.6
Seen it today and looks a big car alright.

Its the gearing and type of driving that would be the difference in fuel ecomomy between 2 such closely rated engines.

A small engined car geared for 3500rpm at 120kmh will use more fuel then a larger engined car geared for 1500rpm at 120kmh. It all depends on the engines, gearing and car type(a 1.0 corsa at 3500rpm will definatly not use more fuel then a 6.2 hummer at 1500rpm...)

I drive a 2.0 diesel mondeo mainly on motorways at 120 with cruise control on average mpg is at best 42-45mpg, if I drive on 80kph roads I will improve this number, faster you go the more diesel you use especially with cruise control on.

Expert on this type of thing are you?

If so, can you explain why I was getting better fuel economy from a Superb 2.0tdi 170 than a Passat 1.6tdi 105? Same motorway journey, more or less same speeds. Average consumption over at least a week.

OP, I haven't driven the 1.6 either (never managed to get down to collect the demo) but, if its anything like the 508 to drive, it actually drives very well. I'd still take the 2.0 if it was available. 2.0 is now available in the Style model.
