Been out of the scene in the last 2 year so not sure with the new processors, Windows 7 etc. I am looking to buy a cheap laptop for a 10-11 year old, just for searching the net. burning DVD's etc. I would have always avoided Celeron's, but not sure about any of the processors or how much ram to run Windows 7.
    screen size anything from 10"-15.2"

    thanks

I'm throwing this Laptop up in 3 Threads here with no response as of yet.

It's €455 delivered, it has the newer type i3 Processor (so it'll be decent performer for a good few years to come) 4GB RAM (Loads, It'll make the Lappie nice and snappy, no waiting for stuff to open or switching to something else), only integrated graphics but it'll do fine for High Def Video, it reads all the common Memory Cards and has a HDMI port.

It may be more than ye guys want but it's future proofed a nice bit and won't be a slow headwrecker.

Shout back if it doesn't suit and if I get a chance/someone will throw up a cheaper one....

Best deal I can find on a current gen i3 is
    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/11199865/art/lenovo/ideapad-z570.html

Comes in a few €'s cheaper than the Asus, I think around €430 delivered

    HI Fluffy,

Bigger Harddrive on that to....no mention of HDMI but it may not be an issue anyway, will this come with narly Euro Plug? Not really an issue either though, just something for OP to maybe be aware of.

Found a cheaper one again, Fujitsu for €418ish delivered. I don't know what build quality is like on these though. No mention of HDMI.

Lads, I dont think a 10 year old needs a laptop with an i3 in it...

OP, this is perfect for those needs IMO

    €361 delivered.

I thought about it but unless OP is on tight budget for the few Euro more abit of future proofing is worth it I think.

The laptop you listed is 80 quid more to be fair. If you want to spend that much extra to future proof, you might as well spend another 80 quid and get a much better deal like a Lenovo with an i5 sandy and 4GB RAM, 750GB HD, Dedicated GFX, USB 3.0, BT 3.0 etc. Those deals are around.

If he didnt need to burn dvds, I could recommend him an even cheaper laptop.

I know, but you have to draw a line, I drew it at decent spec level and at well under €500, not badly priced.

But then your into cheap Netbook land with cheap parts, OP will be back in 12 months wondering why Laptop is overheating and bluescreening.

    (Slight exxageration maybe:))

I think €80 for a Sandybridge i3 is definitely worth it.
Any Sandybridge will last way longer than that AMD E-crapity-crap, any of the i3's posted could last until the receiver of this laptop is going to college without showing it's age much.

Well worth that little extra, unless like Hal said you are on a very tight budget.
Plus for another €80 you won't get an i5 with a dedicated gpu.

Celeron chips are actual ranked higher than the E-450 in this Laptop aswell.

Yes you will. I'm on phone at moment, but will link one later.

Ok so a laptop for a 10 year old, no point getting an i3, 2nd gen or not, as it wont last longer than 4 or 5 years before needing to be replaced, or getting some parts fixed, unless you buy something like a Thinkpad. Something WILL happen it like accidental damage, since your buying it for a child, so buying an i3 laptop is ludicrous and bad advice.

Personally, for a 10 year old, id buy a netbook. Dont fail as often as full sized laps and more child friendly since they're more portable/longer battery.
But then your into cheap Netbook land with cheap parts, OP will be back in 12 months wondering why Laptop is overheating and bluescreening.
Cheap netbook land? Cheap parts? Mate, stop buying Medions and Acers then :pac:. Buy a Lenovo or a Dell and your set for a good few years.

It wont overheat if you ventilate it properly, even more reason not to buy a full size lap for a child.
Plus for another €80 you won't get an i5 with a dedicated gpu.
Maybe not for €80, but for €120-150 you can get a very nice i5 sandybridge with a dedicated card, without resorting to Acers and the like. Look in the right places and you will find them.
Any Sandybridge will last way longer than that AMD E-crapity-crap, any of the i3's posted could last until the receiver of this laptop is going to college without showing it's age much.
No it wont. Its for a child remember, it will get dropped and dragged around. Stop worrying about the processor so much. Theres more to laptops than i3's and i7's mate. How about a solid chassis? A reliable brand that wont collapse after 12 months?

That laptop is grand for a childs needs, its certainly not "crap". Stop with the wrong advice as your wrong on many accounts mate.
Celeron chips are actual ranked higher than the E-450 in this Laptop aswell.
Nothing wrong with a celeron for basic tasks though.

Bit over the top there. Not everyone needs that power or those connections. I doubt the OP does.

OP, my recommendation, perfect for a child, not a college student:

As OP said, its perfect for surfing the net, playing flash games online, listen to music, youtube etc....perfect for a child. I've recommend laps like these to friends for children. Sturdy enough, and if they get damaged, it wont break the bank to fix them. Fine for 3 or 4 years.

If you really need to burn DVDs and need more power/bigger screen: I recommend this: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Fujitsu_Lifebook_AH530_1117820.html
Fujitsu aren't the best brand, but its cheap and cheerful.

Dont fool yourself into thinking you will buy an i3 now and have it/its still working 5 or 6 years down the line. You wont.

Are 10-11 year olds not downloading and converting every link they can lay their mouse on nowadays?

Also netbooks have a 20% higher failure rate than Laptops.
Cheap netbook land? Cheap parts? Mate, stop buying Medions and Acers then :pac:. Buy a Lenovo or a Dell and your set for a good few years.
Meh, their was a Thread like this before, not getting into it again.
Nothing wrong with Acer or Medion either.

 Do I have to blow into them? Smaller the Laptop the less space for Air to move around so your're kinda contradicting yourself. It's the heat that's giving them their high faiure rate.
Nothing wrong with a celeron for basic tasks though.
    OP doesn't want a Celeron.

Barely meets requirements to run Windows 7.

And it's a HP, the only brand I'd never recommend, someone only needs to read back over this Forum to see the bother HP laptops give. €210!

Also look at graph on pg6 of Link above. (or here)

If you really need to burn DVDs and need more power/bigger screen: I recommend this: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Fujitsu_Lifebook_AH530_1117820.html

€361, if going with a Fuji I'd much rather my Fuji from post 4.

It's not ouside the realms of possibility. Thread on here before had them averaging 4-5 years and still going.
