I've been on the look out for a serious road bike for a while now, after 1 year on a second hand Giant SCR (which I love) and about 5,000 km later, it's time for the plunge! The 2011 models for sale now seem to present good value. I'll be looking for a decent bike to tackle the Etape (hopefully:eek:)

I've seen a few Steven's bikes around and like the look of them - build quality seems to be top notch. And, I feel I'll be doing my part for the EU / IMF bailout on one of these German beauties. Better looking than Angle Merkel anyway. :pac:

    Anyway, a few serious questions:

It's a compact double with Compag Athena throughout - Are Compag rear casettes silly money i.e. if I need to replace this with something with lower gearing? I'll probably replace this to as big rear cog as possible (50t if I can get away with it:pac:)

The bikes themselves look well - the paint job seems top quality, but my one concern is a white bike on Irish roads - madness?

I'll hopefully be getting this on the BTW - topping up the over-and-above €1,000 myself, which I don't think is a problem. Becasue of my job situation, I will try pay the balance as quick as possible i.e. one or 2 months (so €490 over 2 months won't be a major drag). My employer has said the limit is €1,000, but I'll be looking to pay the difference over this myself. How does a LBS manage this? Or maybe I'll just have a gander at the Bike to Work thread - I'm sure the answer is in there.

    Danke!

Stevens are great bikes, stiff and responsive.

You can get Token and Miche cassettes for campagnolo, they are not much cheaper though, and I 'd still prefer the original cassette. They are long lasting so I wouldn't say they are too expensive for their weight.

White bikes are a bit of a pain to keep clean and scratch-free but they are also beautiful (I have two).

Any feedback on the Campag components? Are they easy to maintain - I'm thinking runn of the mill cables, brake blocks, the odd busted spoke etc. Would you have any idea of a Shimano equivalent groupset - maybe 105? Thanks

Well I am fan of campagnolo so I am a bit biased. I think they are brilliant if you like the shape of the levers and the hoods in your hands. People with small hands tend not to like them because of the reach of the thumb. They are easy to maintain, they don't ask for much (after the cables stretches at least) and the big plus is that all of the components are fully serviceable.

Athena will be equivalent with the likes of 105-Ultegra, I think the weight is somewhere there.

I would suggest to you to have a try on one beforehand just to see how the levers feel for you, i know Fitzcycles have Stevens bikes in stock.
