Immobliser Question

Sorry if this is not allowed but I thought I'd ask and see.

I have one kye for my car and its starting to fall apart. I was quoted 105 for a replacement key, coded and all. 80 for the key and coding 25 for finding out the code as they key I have is a copy and they cant get the code from it.

I got a key cut for the doors for a tennar though. So it got me wondering, is there some way I can set up the original key with the immobliser chip to see if the new key will start the car?
I have tried starting the car with it but it dies out after a few seconds. I also tried holding the plastic parts of the keys together and starting it then, same thing.
Is there somewhere under the steering coloum I can attach the key to try?

    Hi Kiddums...

Can you not remove the chip from the old key,,and put it into the new one??

As far as I know,,it's only like a grain of rice,,and can be removed with care.

For the record, may I ask where you got a key cut for a tenner??

I'm fitting remote central locking to My car soon,,and want someone to cut the blank blade on the remote fob.

I'm looking for a workaround so I can get a second key. I hate relying on the one key.

I got it cut in the local locksmiths, it's not chiped or anything, just a steel key for the doors.

Ebay is blocked at work so I can't see.

    This is my key:

The replacement is a JMA key. Same style. No space for a chip though, or so I was told, but like I say, I'd like a second key not just a replacement.

i were googling around, wouldnt find free of charge key programming procedures. Seems to be opel keys needs to be programmed with special software with dealer or whatever who works on it professionally. probably you would do yourself, but equipment and software would cost unfortunate.

i thought it would be possible reprogram keys like in vw or renault with certain procedures, like switch on ignition, press lock button , than press again... kind of that.

shop around, might find some cheaper place.

dont know about renault but what your talking about in a vw wont program the imobilizer chip. that is just for the remote locking and can be found in the owners manual!!

people get mixed up in programing keys. there are two things that need programing

1 is the imobilizer chip. this is what is needed to start the car. its an anti theft messure to prevent 'hotwiring' basicly you need the key to start the car. this can usually only be programed by a main dealer or a speliast locksmith.

2 is programing the remote locking. this is usually a few simple steps like mar4ix listed above. some cars need 2 keys and some need only 1 to do it. its usually listed in the owners manual. keys can often drop this code if the battery in the fob runs out..

The immobiliser is just a small chip thats installed in the key you have.
Ifyou want you can take it out and tape it to the ignition barrel. Then the "plain" key that you had cut should work fine.
The only problem is that the car will not be immobilised so anyone could technically steal it with just a screwdriver and a hammer.....but if it's a fairly modern car then almost all potential thieves will assume it has an immobiliser as usual.
BTW the "reader" for the immobiliser is normally a black ring around the ignition barrel, if you take the cowl off you should be able to see it, just tape the immobiliser chip near this and you should be OK.

if you are going to do this be very carefull of the way you tape it up.
you dont want to brake it or loose it. these chips are tiny. if you loose it or the tape falls away the chances of you finding it again are very slim. you are talking big money then.
