Discovery 2 issues

    Hi folks,

I just collected my Disco 2 today, its a 03 model. Haven't had a chance to go over it with a fine tooth comb yet (I inspected it before buying of course and was happy in general for the price) but I'm expecting a few niggles to pop up.

For the moment, just two issues.

The first is just slightly annoying, the key fob locks the doors fine but only seems to open the passenger side front and rear doors which means I have to use the key fob first to knock off the alarm and then use the key in the door to open the driver's door. Could be as simple as a fuse maybe? Too dark and crappy outside to go rooting now so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Second problem is with the steering. Its pretty much fine, just a little bit of play. TBH I didn't take much notice, I'm from an agricultural background ;), but her pretty self noticed it straight away. So. is it a big/expensive job to replace whatever rubbers/bushes, etc, does anyone know?

Thanks for reading, hopefully someone can enlighten me.

P.S., where is the best place to get parts and accessories for this jeep? Am I better off buying online from the English companies?

The central locking issue maybe a failed solenoid on that door. You'll need to take off the door card and inspect.

The description of the steering issue could be anything, really impossible to say what it may be and how much to repair.

Thanks doc, I didn't explain it fully, neither the driver's door or the driver's side rear door unlock so I'm wondering if they're connected?

Yeah the sterring thing isn't a major thing to be fair, might have a look on one of the british parts company's sites and see what goes into them.

might first visit nct or garage for full inspection, not expensive these days. would be more expensive buy parts, which may no need to replace.

Thanks Mar. It's actually just been NCT'd so obviously there's nothing wrong with it apart from a few niggles. Might do that though, bring it to a garage for inspection. Would this need to be a main dealer or any garage with diagnostics?

well, that car not a rocket science, well known and pretty popular at some stage. worth call to dealer, just to find out prices. As you just bought that thing, you shall do full service on it, as you never know what is behind that car history.
Call dealer, just to find out what price would be for full test and service, as in these days dealers keep prices down, also call around different local garages, what kind money they want for all that. good would be to use garage you know, or at least have some good recommendations.

That is a very bad assumption.....

Yeah, sorry, didn't mean it exactly like that!

As said, door locks is probably a lazy or failed solenoid.

Do not go near a dealer, plenty of independents with diagnostic gear as well as lot of owners (myself included). If you're anywhere near Tipp I'll read your faults and predict lottery numbers with my Nanocom :D You'll need a lottery win if you go to a dealer (with maybe one or two honourable exceptions)

In theory, NCT should have spotted any bush wear but there's plenty of them. What's the symptoms, does it wander slightly in the straight ahead position? If there's no obvious bush or ball joint wear, the steering box is probably worn, fairly straightforward to replace, it's not something that an NCT will pick up unless really bad.

If you are mechanically savvy, do a search on RAVE and download the electronic workshop manual. There's dozens of Land Rover forums for free advise as well. You can buy your own diagnostic kit, Nanocom Evolution and Bearmach Hawkeye are under €400.

Wait until the three amigos come up on the dash, give you something to think about ;)

In addition, with regards to the wandering on the road, what wheels are fitted to it? I've seen a lot of LR's with the optional or replica 20 and 22 inch wheels and they wander all over the place on roads which have poor surfaces or roadwork lines etc, as is the case with most cars with large wheels and wide tyres.

Sean, might take you up on that offer, herself is from Thurles so we're up there a bit. Just leaving there now in fact. I bought the Haaynes manual and will be doing a full service incl the transmission soon enough.

Doc, she's fine on the road, drives straight, stays straight under braking, etc. I just drove down from Dublin and she was a dream in fairness so it's just a case of getting used to a new machine maybe.

PM me if you need a second opinion or faults read if you're in the area, I'm 7 miles from Thurles.

It's quite possible that the steering is fine, just that herself has never driven a big 4x4 before!

My 110's steering box is worn, it doesn't show up on our potholed roads but it wanders from rut to rut on UK motorways. Had a spare box on the shelf for months, may get round to fitting it before my next trip there

Finally back on the laptop after the weekend, was checking in om the phone which isn't ideal for posting replies.

So after a long spin over the weekend I think my initial reaction to a steering problem was wrong. It seems grand to me tbh. There is a little play in the steering wheel but nothing major, certainly no more than I'd expect from a car of that age.

As I said, I intend to do a full service on her in the next few weeks, including the gearbox and transfer box. I'll make up a list as per the Haynes manual, not near it now but I think there's a 120k mile service detailed in it. There'll probably be a fairly long list of service parts to be got plus a few other bits and pieces (dashboard bulbs and the like) so I'm wondering would it be cheaper to order them online from one of the UK crowds like Paddock, Famous Four or John Craddock? Does anyone on here deal with them and know which is best value and reliable?

Also, I'm thinking about putting xenon bulbs in her, is this much hassle?

I use Paddocks and LRseries, good service from both but Paddocks postage is cheapest, £10 flat rate. Order a service kit, cheaper that way. Get OEM or genuine filters though, they will offer them as well as Britpart which you don't want. Alternatively if you are near Moate or Galway you could try Crozier 4x4 or West Coast Spares and save the postage. Order an auxiliary drive belt as well, need to check if you have aircon and ACE fitted as it affects which belt.

Engine needs 5W30 semi or fully synthetic, manual gearbox uses MTF94, transfer box and diffs use 75W80 gear oil.
