If i paid 40 euro each way to transport sports equipment to the canary islands for a sporting holiday but ended up breaking my leg in an accident can an airline legally say that

In accordance with ...... General Conditions of Carriage all monies paid are non refundable, therefore we are not in a position to process a refund of the fee paid on booking confirmation .

Can any company say this? surely one has the right to cansel?

That's what travel insurance is for! You had an accident, the airline didn't.

Under the Warsaw Convention airlines can make up the rules as they go along.
