Ok so I'm going to get a new saorview tv for my mum for christmas, and my question is this.
If I connect her existing aerial to the tv will the tuner be able to pick up both analogue and dtt (is it a dual tuner) . The reason I ask is so that she can still watch her bbc etc from deflector (will the amp etc damage the tv), and then when she gets used to it I can install a combi box later, as a new box and tv would be too steep a learning curve at the one time.
Location btw is ballinrobe co mayo.

The deflectors have a shutoff deadline too (bizarrely its two and a half months after RTENL's ASO)

Mind you there may be other circumstances when having dual analogue/digital tuning might come in handy after official ASO even if the notion offends some of the technopurists.

Dunno if any of the Saorview equipment on the market also does analouge but given that some of the (UK) Freeview stuff still does Im assuming there must be still some "dual standard" kit still on the market ?

Analogue (deflector) and DTT (Saorview) won't be a problem. Some TVs require a button press to select between the analogue and digital channels (e.g. Sony), others store them all together and then they (analogue and DTT channels) can be moved around manually to your desired position.

Thanks for the replies, I'm sure quite a few of the technologically challenged will find the complications of combi boxes daunting compared to the foggy and substandard joys of deflectors relative simplicity.

Get a sat box + Dish to replace the Deflector anyway. FAR better quality and over 50 useful channels out of 200+. Get a "Freeview HD" box "Freesat HD" box. You'd never ever want a deflector signal again. Simple to use, doesn't need tuned.

watty, I reckon you meant a Freesat HD box rather than a Freeview HD one.

As watty said above a simple Freesat box in conjunction with the Saorview TV might be a better than a combi box for the UK channels. Any change to channels, frequency change etc is done automatically.

A Freesat+ receiver will give her the option to record also but a bit more expensive.

While I can see where youre coming from a combi box is arguably less daunting than faffing around with TWO boxes (and the associated remotes/wiring/settings) particularly if the TV in question isint overly endowed with inputs to start out with.

Main downside with combi bxes (or at least any which have appeared on the market to date) is that most/all of them have pretty limited EPG functionality . Theres actually a gap in the market for dual Saorview/Freesat (or even Saorsat/Freesat) gear with full 8 day EPG/auto updating of frequencies/channel lists etc

A Freesat box and Saorview box beats a combi. Generic Satellite boxes are a PAIN.

If and when someone brings out a "universal remote" which actually works properly you might convince me.

Got a Hanspree a couple of months ago - not Saorview approved, but allegedly has MHEG5 which does not seem to function for DTT text at present (haven't looked into it as I don't use text) - which tuned in the RTE analogue stations as well as the DTT stations when doing its setup. It separated the analogue channels from the DTT ones.

So, I think it likely there are TVs which will suit your purpose.
