Overcharging

My car is in the garage at the minute as it is under and over charging occasionally. Regulator was changed and a whole new alternator and neither made a difference. Anyone know what else could cause over/under charging?

Sorry, don't know much about cars, learning the hard way!

It's a 2003 Ford Focus 1.6. Recently had to replace the engine due to head gasket. The overcharging problem was there before the head gasket failure however. Just a bit worried it could now be an ECU problem and this would have to be replaced - :(

There is a three wire connector that goes on to the alternator, make sure they are not shorting off each other. does the battery light come on now and again?

I actually got that username from looking around the room, I have an imagination to match that of Fr Dougal.

Thanks Plug. Will get the mechanic to check that. No battery light at all. Have been intermittently getting Engine Management Light. Came up with Overcharging fault when checked.
