Installing gas fire, does chimney need to be cleaned?

Our builders have put in place our new gas fire - Gazco Studio 1. The gas pipes haven't been installed yet and the fire is just sitting in the opening. Do they need to do some kind of draught test before they connect it? There was an old electric fire fitted in the opening when we bought the house. Should the chimney be cleaned as well? I don't know when it was last done. Just a bit worried that they will try and cut corners and just connect it up. :o

    Yes. Clean the chimney.

Two tests are need. A flue flow test, before the fire is fitted to test draw of chimney and to ensure there is one entrance and one exit. A smoke pellet is used for a flue flow test.

Once the fire is fitted and is ready to light, a spillage test is carried out. This is done according to manufactures instructions, a smoke match is placed in a set place and the smoke is observed. it should be drawn up the chimney. This test proves that no products of combustion are entering the room.

Gas fires are by far the riskiest gas appliance you can install in your home. Ensure you have a correctly sized vent fitted, and fit a CO detector in the room.

Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to fit one unless they are a RGI.

Thanks for the info. I'll make sure the builder follows the guidelines.

Can anyone recommend a chimney sweep please? :o
