Medical Card Expired & Hospital Appointment - Be Aware

My card expired 1/2010 and renewal is still pending.

Arrived at Hospital yesterday to be admitted as a day patient for a colonoscopy after waiting 7 months for this.

Luckily I had anticipated what would happen but still was shocked.

"oh thats out of date, we can't accept that" in a terse tone.

Luckily I had a print out of my 'card status' from Medical Card Online
which showed Eligibility End Date 30/11/11 which I produced and only then did she back track and say unless you have etc etc

I would have thought in 2011 with all the technology in this country that hospitals would have access to internet in order to check card status, at least if not other things..GP's can do it but apparently not hospitals, well not Waterford Regional Hospital anyway.

Just be aware folks we don't need this added stress, bring the kitchen sink with you if you have to:(

Why didn't you present your proof along with your expired card? It sounds like you waited until the card was refused to explain the situation.

I don't see what your point is, it's up to you to provide proof of your eligibility. I'm sure they could have checked it for you anyway, I was admitted to A&E without my medical card before, just had to quote my PPSN and I was approved.

If you go on a train you need to bring your ticket- this was a planned procedure so people should bring their correct documentation, staff have enough to do without chasing up things you should have done- try that stunt with Ryanair and see how far you get

Thanks for the heads-up on this. A lot of people are experiencing long delays in card renewals. You're lucky that you were able to print out your online card status. A significant amount of people don't have online access and even people who do have access don't always have a working printer. Hopefully they will find a way to deal with the backlog in a more efficient manner.
