Questions about ultrasounds in Dublin/Ireland

    Hi ladies and gents,

Me and my wife have moved to Dublin since spring. When we left, our gynecologist there told us that we had 2 ovarian cysts and that they will need to be monitored and if they don't go away they may need to be removed if they cause problems / to increase fertility.

We both have Aviva insurance and some benefits from there, what i want to ask though is the following...

Is a GP the right person to visit for an ultrascan / advise on the matter?

Are all GPs the same?.. or some have more knowledge on the gynecological area?

It seems really wierd when i compare the two health systems how in Greece you visit specialized gynecologists right away and here i get the impression that you must go through a middle man.

    Am i missing something?

Thanks a million for any feedback.

    K.

I go to a GP clinic where there are several doctors. For Gynae/Fertility related issues one Gynae GP handles it, another doctor who is polish treats the Poles who come in, and so on. This is a city GP clinic so it stands that there would be more doctors in the practice.

However it is likely that you would encounter a GP with no additional specialist gynae expertise, but the starting point is go to the GP for a referral to a specialist - if you go via insurance or private then you should get an appointment quickly.

In Ireland, Fertility consults are not covered by Aviva or VHI insurance, Quinn Health Insurance cover some, but I believe its limited. But if it is a gynaelogical issue, they would likely cover it. For example, I was scheduled for a Hystersalpinogram Xray on my tubes. I had to pay, it was not covered by my insurance as it was a fertility investigations. However it is possible that if it was requested as a result of gynaelogical issues it may have been.

The best thing to do is to call Aviva and ask them.

Unfortunately as the cysts were diagnosed in Greece before you got insurance they will probably be classed as a pre-existing condition for which the waiting period of up to 5 years for coverage will apply.
