if nudity is illegal, shouldn't clothes be provided for everyone?

Happened across an article earlier which said that a ban on nude hiking has been upheld in Switzerland based on public decency laws, which got me thinking about how ridiculous the whole idea that nudity is something that can be legislated against is.

We're all born stark bollock nekkid, we use clothes to keep us protected and warm, but how in the hell should it be illegal to choose to walk around without them, should you so wish?

It's the 21st century now FFS, are we still so backward that the thought of seeing naked people going about their business offends us that much?

My next, somewhat unwarranted, jump in logic is that if the various world governments rule that it is illegal not to wear any clothes, shouldn't they then be obliged to make free clothing available? After all, if someone can't afford to buy clothes, how can they be expected to wear them? And if it's ruled illegal to be naked in public, surely provisions must be made to have free clothes available for everyone, no?

    Now, back to work.

Nudity isn't illegal, you're just required to wear clothes in civil society.

If driving without insurance is illegal shouldn't free insurance be provided for everyone?

I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a scheme for funded clothing in place in most countries. Also, don't the likes of Salvation Army and that provide clothing to the needy?

Right, so welcome to Ireland. We have this thing for quite some time now called the Social Protection system. It ensures that everyone who lives here has some money. We also have this fine establishment known as Penneys. Put the two together and what do you get??? Clothes!!

OP - What did you think social welfare was for?

to give you enough money to survive. clothes dont fall into that category for the majority of the year given the irish climate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,538 ✭✭✭flutterflye

I think the idea of nudity in public being against the law absolutely stupid tbh, for all the reasons given in the op.

There is nothing wrong with nudity at all.
Fair enough, we don't really want to see all the flab and ugly bits hanging out while we are trying to buy some milk from tesco, but it's not 'wrong'.

People should be allowed to be naked in public if they so wish imo.

Is it like how muslim women are supposed to cover up so that other men than their husbands don't get ideas?
Would it lead to more rapes?

What is the reason behind it being illegal?
I honestly cannot figure it out.

No, to provide you with a certain standard of living, we could severely reduce it if people just had to "survive" on it. After all, you don't need electricity/transport/means of communication/any food other than 4stone sacks of spuds/... I hate to break it to you but it includes clothing.

#social welfare - but they do the CWO will provide a one off payment for clothing if you can't afford, social welfare funds more than survival but after the next few budgets I don't know if that will be the case

Too feckin cold in this country for the question to be anything other than hypothetical.

We should make young fellas walking around with their pinky bare chests out and their tshirts tucked into their waistbands illegal though, that would be great.

wtf surely you can be naked at home ????

Although what happens if you open the door to some pesky cold callers/Tv License Inspector while starkers ? Surely they were asking for it ?

you can be done for being naked in your home if its possible for someone to see in. even if theyre stand up there with their face to the window, you're breaking the law

i think my, odd, point was that it's such a bizarre law and nobody seems in the least bit concerned at why it's still there in this day and age

it's a bit of an unhealthy mentality that many people carry around that naked = sex/pervert/etc

No, to provide you with a certain standard of living, we could severely reduce it if people just had to "survive" on it.

well that's an argument for another day, but imo the social welfare should offer nothing more than the ability to survive, anything else is taking the pìss and hardly conducive to getting people back to work

well if somebody sees you from outside etc you can be deemed breaking the law

you wouldnt even think twice about it if it was a relatively normal occurance, which it could be if it wasnt against the law

well it's legal to wear shorts but you won't find people even wearing those for most of the year. if you don't catch your death of cold in Ireland the dampness will wear you down instead.
