Gift Cards\Vouchers

What is the point of them? Are you not just limiting the receiving person to a particular place to use them? I just don't see the point in going into HMV or wherever, handing over €, getting a card\voucher in place and then, giving that to someone special - I mean, why not allow them to be the judge of where best to use the money? Maybe they don't need the newest DVD\Game but their shoes are falling apart. If I gave them money, off they go to clarks and buy themselves a spiffing new pair of shoes.

My wife says that giving money is impersonal but surely giving someone a card WITH THE AMOUNT THAT YOU PUT ON IT has the same effect??

    I just don't get it....

Just agree with her. Then you might get "it".

    Works with most women.

Because resorting to a cd/dvd is the laziest trick in the present book. So getting a gift voucher covers "Oh, what if another person buys him\her the same thing?!".

Surely a "cover all" present such as a gift card\voucher is even more lazier than looking for a specific item (even if it is lazy in itself)?

Plus with the allforone shopping vouchers or amazon vouchers or (if its in your area) the local shop vouchers (Shop LK has about 40 shops that you can spend it in in the local area) its not that limiting any more

Vouchers exist because 25% of them never get spent, giving whoever makes them a reason to sell more to suckers. It's free money.

Your wife is right, even if she's wrong she's right. It's because of these dynamics that husbands are allowed to buy 50" tvs and flashing gizmos. Accept it and move on.

Maybe it's because you have to spend the vouchers on something specific - cash would just go into your wallet to be spent on petrol or down the pub.

So you're buying them a gift with a voucher - you're just letting them choose it.

I know where you're coming from, but vouchers can be handy. I buy my mum vouchers for specific shops, 'cause I know she loves shopping in them but never spends money on herself - this way she has to!!!

Also - just remembered other times when vouchers are great. My mum's always buying nice food when I come over, and she won't take money off me. So, the odd time I get her a voucher for €50 for Dunnes or the likes and I can make some contribution towards everything that she does for me.

    I love you mum!! :D

Most shopping centres do those mastercard vouchers now too so least its giving money, buit not limiting you to one specific shop...
My mam used to always give me money as pressies, but she knew Id just spend it on food or bills or something and she hated that, so she'd pick a favourite sghop and buy me a voucher. Makes sense I suppose.

Would still much rather someone bought me something (thought...effort etc) and included a gift reciept so if I didnt like it I could bring it back.

This year I've decided to give people presents of my Tesco Club Card vouchers.

If it's good enough for Miriam "Massive Vagina" O'Callaghan, it's good enough for me.

Some people are just too difficult to shop for. If I know they really like a particular shop, why not grab them a voucher from that particular one?
That way they can get whatever they want.

    I win, they win...we all win! :D
