Multiple full recording/commentating setups at tournaments?

    Yes please.

Getting a full commentary set up on top of a hauppage would be another 3-400 quid but it's certainly doable. I spent a year getting all the parts together though :)

Colour me interested, I haven't bought myself a nice little gift in a while now and I think I'm due one :P Is the software included?

    Yup, pc software is included.

The only thing you need to direct feed record that's not included in this model is the component cable for the console and of course a component in on your tv :)

I was looking up these the other day. If I get this job at Stream tomorrow, I'll probably pick one up. Wouldn't mind being able to record some of the events, though I don't think I'd be able to get commentary setup for awhile after. But just having another recorder might be nice for those events Doom might miss.

If you wanted to do what in my business is called a "dirty workaround" for commentary you could get a mike for the recording laptop, and have audacity recording it as the fight wears on. Then you could overlay the audacity mp3 over the game footage.

It's a little time consuming and wouldn't have the quality of the commentary we do, but it'd be a good way to get around not having me = no good footage.

I'm tempted. Is it complicated to use? What would have to be bought for commentary?

A hauppage is actually amazingly easy to use, I had basically put a whole day by for getting it to work but it literally worked on the first go for me. This is even more impressive considering I work on mac and all the software is unofficial bespoke stuff. There's a little more work with a ps3 but it's nothing voa and I didn't figure out in about 5 minutes.

There's no real reason to go messing with settings and the like if you don't want to, just let her rip in lurvely 720p.

As for commentary... that's a different matter.

In order to replicate my set up you would also need the following:

POWERED component splitter (get a chinese knock off one, this is specialised equipment and a branded one from the States could cost $400 instead of 15)

2 phono to phono stereo cables

    1 extra component video cable

    2 Microphones + leads

A small 8 channel mixing desk (available locally for about 2-300 in stores like Music Maker, online a bit cheaper)

To make a long story short, you go component/audio from console into splitter.

One output of component and audio goes directly into the Tv/monitor for uninteruppted, unlagging footage with minimal points of failure.

Another component (video only) goes directly into the hauppage.

The second set of audio cables goes into the phono input of the mixing desk. So do the two mikes.

Then you check the volumes are ok and you output from the mixing desk via the second phono cable to the hauppage. Voila, on the fly mixed commentary.

I'd be tempted to get one of these bad boys for ripping some of my ancient replays of Smash and Halo and the like, could always supply one for belfast events as well.

Game are currently selling their own brand Gameware component cables for €12.99.

They work on 360, PS2/3 and Wii (possibly Gamecube and SNES too as I don't think Nintendo has changed that AV port in decades)

Gamecube and SNES are the same, but the Wii one is different AFAIK.

I already have an AVerMedia capture card that lets me record from HDMI cables.

The downside? It's an internal card for my desktop, so I can only use it for recording at home. This was never a problem for me before I realised you guys bother to set up captures+commentary.

I also use audacity and edit that stuff together in Adobe Premiere, but it's usually not too fiddly. Interesting link though, DooM!

This lets you record from HDMI as well:

178 euro on amazon currently. Dunno how good it is versus the Hauppage but it seems to get good reviews (seems to not work with some motherboards though, you need USB 3.0).

BlackMagic stuff is the top end of the home recording stuff.

They do PCI-E, USB3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces.
