hope im in the right place to ask this question but here goes anyways.

i recently bought a desktop computer and also got a wirless usb thing aswell as there is upc broadband in the house (cant connect this straight to the computer as it is not mine). my problem is, my laptop is connecting at 54Mbps but the desktop is only gettin between 18 and 24Mbps max.

How would i go about setting up my desktop to become wireless.
is there software that i can download or do i need hardware (wireless adapter card?), or could there be another reason why the laptop works so much better (dunno if this makes a difference, the laptop is about six years old, hasnt had wireless connection for a long time, recently i downloaded some drivers and managed to get it goin again, also all other laptops in the house are only getting 24Mbps connection). the desktop is an acer aspire x3910.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I don't know if the desktop and laptop are right beside each other but if it's a poor signal in parts of the house you might be able to put a better antenna on to the wireless router. If you can unscrew the antenna, you might be able to put one of these on to it... shipping could take a while...

Alternatively get a wireless 54g or 300n adapter for the desktop... you'll find cheaper on eBay though, make sure you have a PCI slot available before you buy...

ok cool. yes the desktop and laptop are side by side. so i need a free pci slot, how do i go about checking that out, can i do it without taking the tower apart? and is it an internal or external component as the tower is quite small and ive a feeling it might be tight for space inside.

if i do get the adapter is there still a chance of 24mbps connection as all the other laptops in the house are only getting this speed?

Heres a link to the specs if needed, http://www.cdw.ca/shop/products/Acer-Aspire-X3910-E4032-P-E5700-3-GHz/2299747.aspx

I would replace the antenna first if you can unscrew it. That may solve the wireless signal problem. You could also try Netstumbler on the laptop and see if you have interferance on the channel you are using. Channels 1, 6 & 11 don't overlap - try and put your wireless router on one of those channels with the least users.

Failing that, you could get another USB wireless 54g/300n adapter (that PC does seem quite small for a PCI adapter) I find them a bit hit and miss - some good, some bad - Linksys used to have really sensitive USB adpaters, I haven't used any of the 300n ones recently so can't say... try the other stuff first then maybe look at getting another adapter
