A Government backbencher has criticised the Cabinet decision to change the law to allow Ministers to be driven in bus lanes.

The decision to move into the fast lane was taken by Ministers, by way of a majority vote at Cabinet, and was passed by the Dáil on October 18th using a statutory instrument. This is a technical device to process a Government decision without having a debate. The move was strongly opposed within Cabinet by Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar who pointedly stressed his views in a handwritten note on Government documentation.
    [...]
Ministerial cars ceased to have access to bus lanes when Garda drivers were dispensed with by the Government as a cost-saving measure in line with pledges made before the February general election. Now Ministers use their own cars, have civilian drivers paid by the State and get travel expenses.

I know it won't have any impact on the day to day operations of buses in Dublin but it's bad PR for them.

A non story. The State got it's key savings from the removal of cars and garda drivers. It's a fair enough concession.

how do you figure that, they're no more important than anyone else in the country, except to themselves.

Have to agree with that. This kind of elitism is an anachronism from a dark time in history, and the EU has been slowly sneaking it back in; time to stand against it.

Will these ministerial cars be accepting the new Leap card?

Knowing how attentive our Gardaí are to the RTA in general and bus lanes in particular, I think the possibility of the entire cabinet being hauled to the side of the road in Nassau St. was always a remote one.

Anyone remember the first cabinet meeting after the government was formed when they travelled to the Aras by bus?How cynical a PR stunt was that?
