They are 12v though, so they must have a transformer to work. Is the plug bigger than a standard plug top by any chance?

You can use 230v stuff generally outside once its designed to be outside doesn't always have to be 12v

Hi Davy no its just a normal plug, I opened up the plug and it only has 2 wires as far as I can tell it doesnt have a earth wire?

Its also 230v they sent me!

Should it also have a kitemark?

Any help would be great thanks so much!

From what you have said, I would be sending it back because received isn't as described. From a quick look at the item page and it states they are 12v. If its just fitted to a 230v/13a plug top its not right. My 2 cents on it

Could be in trouble so. Its a ebay link ya but bought it outside ebay via paypal as I was having problems with the postage options and they have bad english so just was easier to do:(

If it has no CE mark (which may be counterfeit anyway) it cannot be sold in EU. Was there any paperwork with the lights? Any factory details?
As you paid £117 I would say you were royally ripped off.
If you send me any markings you can find I will try to check what you have bought.

Thanks, No I only paid 17.99GBP per set I got two and 8GBP postage, they must of been editing the ad and made a mistake! No CE mark or anyother marks! No instructions no details on box just says made in China.

I bought from them as they "say" they are uk based. It was shipped from the uk alright and they have a good feedback history.

    Few pics

    Does this plug look ok?

    LED Quantity: 300
    Voltage: 12v,2a
    String Color: Clear
Condition: Guarantee 100% Good Condition, Brand New in Package
    Advantage:
Waterproof (the plug is not waterproof and must be used indoor)
    Ultra bright LED lights
Long lasting, stay cool, energy saving
Ideal for gardens, walls, fences, roofs, trees, boats, cars and so on

Polarity of the plug is wrong anyway. Brown should be to the fuse side. Will still work but best keeping it right.

The controller box will drop the voltage down to operate the LED`s. But I have a couple if similar sets of xmas ones, which have 12v adaptors. Thats what should really be on these type of items to isolate them from the mains, rather than 230v direct into the controller unit.

Thanks Robbie, im trying to get a refund, but the sellers "bad english" seems to have gotten worse and they dont have a clue what im on about:rolleyes:

Most Chinese manufacturers I deal with know their stuff. This appears to be a definite no, no.
There is no CE mark therefore this should not be on sale in EU.
IP44 is not waterproof - it is OK to install it in a bathroom (zone 1 & 2) where it gets steam and damp but it cannot be installed in a shower for example so it certainly cannot be out in the rain.
The plug should be wired correctly and be sealed on the cable. I think this is also current EU regulations.
    It says Volts: 0.8 amps!!
You paid a large sum of money for a badly labeled and possibly dangerous product - in my view. I would bin it as you stand nil chance of getting your money back.
It was probably made for other markets with less stringent safety rules.
If they have a UK outlet then send it off to Trading Standards and see what they have to say. It may save someones house burning down or worse.

Look at the picture in Paddy147`s post from a couple of days ago and you can clearly see the differance in quality.Plus they where a bargain.

Also, if that colour is showing correct, that's a brown 13amp fuse. It should be no more than 3amp.

Thats one good thing about paddys posts anyway, plenty of photos. it always helps.

i have similar sets, with a controller like the OP`s, but the 230v to 12v adaptor is inside the house, not 230v into the contoller. So anything outside in the rain will be 12v.

I think we can conclude they're definitely not safe for outdoor use and they're probably not very safe for indoor use either.

    :D

I always find this a huge risk when buying online from someone I don't know.
I recently got an item which came with a BS1363-compatible plug moulded on. It had narrower than normal pins and no fuse, yet it fitted an Irish socket.

    unfused_dangerous_in_uk_chinese_plug.jpg

Seems, it's very much a case of buyer-beware if you're buying online.

Agreed, they look dodgy I'd send them back and get a refund, then get em elsewhere as I'd say they will continue to send you similar specification equipment.
