Conti or Bridgestone?

    Evening all.

Having done a bit of net resarch, just looking for some real world experience from people if possible.

I have the incredibly dodgy in the wet Federal tyres on my car, and have been given the following prices foe replacments:

    £95 a corner for Continental SC3.
£100 a corner for Bridgestone (wasnt told the exact tyre, but I'm assuming thy're Turanza's at that price.)

I had Conti SC2's on the OE wheels I had, and found them quite good for wear/ road noise/ and both wet & dry grip, but have never had Bridgestone tyres of any type on any car I've ever owned. So I'm basically looking to see what peoples opinions are.

Don't get me wrong, I know the prices are cracking (it's for 225/45/17, including balance & fit), so just looking for opinions as to what to go for, from first hand experience of people off here.

As always, all input/ advice appreciated.

I've heard mixed reviews on Turanzas regarding wear. The fathers Mondeo ate them very quickly too.

Conti SC are quite good. What size are the tyres?

Same as your own man. 235/45/17. What did you end up putting on yours when you got rid of the Federals?

And just to confuse the mix, my contact has just come back to say he can do P6000's for £85.

So that's three damn good prices. You can change the thread title of you feel the need.

Stay away from P6000s. I'm about to replace a set that's only done about 12000km on my Passat. They wear badly and grip wet or dry is nothing to write home about.

The only thing in their favour for me is that I got them stupidly cheap on a set of wheels I was buying in a scrapyard.

I've used Conti PremiumContact2 on the Passat before and they wore pretty well. Good and grippy too, so I'd expect the SportContact to be better.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I had Conti CS on my 7-series for years. Excellent tyre in wet and dry, but mine were very expensive at the time (RRP of €330 a corner about 5 years ago although I paid significantly less for them, 255/45 18" iirc)

    .

So which size are you after?

I have Bridgestone Potenza 050 225/45/17on my Octy
Couldn't believe the grip/stopping goodness of them wet or dry. ( within reason) you can still push too hard when tried to their limits

My experience with them has been fine if you consider 20k kms good mileage out of them while rotating them front to back.

I find the cabin of the car very noisy but have been told the Bridgestones add to this.

I am between what to put on mine next but I feel it will be either Uniroyal Rainsport 2 or Hankook V12

And when I had 195/65/15's on it, with the OE wheels, the last tyres were Conti SC2, and I didn't notice much cabin noise.

But since the wheel upgrade, it's damn noisy!

I put Dunlop SportMaxx on. I've had them a few times before and like them. 12k km on them now and very little wear. 225/45/17 is usually the size on them.

Depending on budget the vag sites tend to recommend Michelin pilot sport 3's.

I'd seen that, but don't think the budget'll stretch that much. had been contemplating part worns, but I'd only be saving €35 a corner.

I replaced Conti sc 2's off the x1 with Dunlop sport 01's and think they give much better grip and road noise reduced a lot.

SeanW on here has over 21k on his Hankook V12's and has plenty left ion them yet. He rates them as very good tyres.

I bought these last week. Very happy with them and they are alot quiter than the Michelin Pilot Sports I took off.

Nice one Bazz. Seem to be getting good reviews online. Might have to look into them as well.

Yes it was the online reviews that sold me in the end.

Hi OP, had been using Bridgestones on my Mazda since I got it 6 years ago and switched to Vredestein this year when I couldn't get hold of the bridgestones. Generally happy but don't feel as confident with them in the wet. Will be going back to the turanza ER30's next time round. Had the ER300's from the factory when I bought the car and they wore pretty quick!! The ER30's are excellent though. My 2c worth.

I got myself SC3's last week on my 17's - had SC2's before and they were great. If you can get them at that price, I would!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Got Bridgestone Potenzas S001 on my GTI. €145 or so a corner fitted locally but very nice tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,327 ✭✭✭Chuck_Norris

Thanks for all the replies folks. I'm veering towards the SC3's. As I said, I has SC2's, albeit on smaller rims, and found them quite good. So I think for me I'm taking a "better the devil you know" approach.

I have these on my Passat too. They are a great tyre so far.

Had Turanza's on a previous steed and couldn't fault them.

Have Conti's on current runabout and can't fault them either.

Running BFG A/T's on the Jeep at the moment and they are very impressive.

In my youth I had problems with all sorts of tyres... In hindsight it was probably the way I drove... ;)

I was looking at Uniroyal Rainsport 2 but online reviews say they have a very soft sidewall. Flexing a lot in hard corning [probably not an issue 99% of the time], but my concern would be fatal damage to the tyre on our potholed filled roads.

    Anyone running on rainsports?

That is the only thing that is offputting for me also. One seller told me this about soft sidewalls and slight under inflated they can burst alarmingly easy

Got a part worn one of these Uniroyals about 3 weeks ago to keep me going after I got a nail in the sidewall of one of my Falkens.

Burst it last week in a big pothole :(

    Enough said for me
I am leaning towards the Hankook at this point in time.

I know, i was pretty much sold on them but the sidewall has put me right off. I think Vredestein Sportrac 3 will be my next purchase, they get good reviews. Not sure if they are commonly stocked in a lot of tyre places though.

My experience with Conti SportContacts is, that if you have a good bit torque, they won't last. As they wear down they become some moldy / gunky undefinable rubber surface. Also, a lot of people have problems with tracking once they wear down.

Bridgestone Potenza's have lasted me 3 trackdays without giving me issues (and regular driving inbetween) on the M5.

Tuaranzas on the other side, I couldn't recommend.

What are you looking for? Ultimate grip or long lasting or a combination of both?

If you are looking for top performance forget the Re050s and the continentals. The goodyear eagle f1 asymmetrics are the best road going tyre in my book for any money bar a set of r888 road going track tyres. They didnt last me more than 8k on the fronts the last two sets i bought though. The ultrac sessantas are another fantastic tyre.

For a car like a diesel octavia i would be looking at the falken fk452's, grand tyre for a road car thats not 200bhp+ and driven to within an inch of its life and will last very good mileage too.

I thought I read somewhere those Falkens don't last Pi$$ing time

I got 20k miles out of my last set of fk452's compared with 12k out of the ultrac sessantas and 7k out of the eagle f1 asymmetics. They dont have the same outright grip but at least when they lose grip it is progressive. The re050's I had on the car were a little bit better in the dry than the fk452's (worse in the wet) but only last 10k on the front.

On a diesel octavia the fk452's would be perfect i would imagine and wear less than on my dc5.

On better tyres you get less milage, simply because they do their job. They wear quicker. That you get 20k out of Falkens compared to 7k out of eagle F1's just proves how much less grip the Falkens have. I wouldn't trust them on wet roads.

I had the falken 452's on the vRS when I had it and found them pretty good, found the wear bareable, they were also on the rear of the s2000 when I bought it but they didn't last very long at all :D

They last fairly well on mine anyway.

Also use the 912s and they last well also.

I put a set of SportContacts on my yoke this year, replaced the original Pirellis. I'm happy with them so far, wearing well and decent in the rain.

Feel free to share where you're geting 17's for that price...

Thats what i said in my earlier post Marlow, the eagle F1's are the best road going tyre you can get for any money but they are super soft. A remapped diesel octavia just wont see the best of them.

On the wet performance point, wear rating and tyre softness wouldnt be my be all and end all. The fk452's are a much superior tyre to the bridgestone re050s in the wet (i found these very poor in the wet) and the difference in wear was quite substantial. Tyre thread pattern plays a large part.

Sorry for dragging up a slightly old thread Mods.

Just to close this off, put the SC3's on the car, and have just shy of 4,500km's done since.

Fantastic grip in the dry, and progressive loss of grip in the wet. Wear seems to be impressive. But haven't taken an accurate depth reading yet.

Another bonus for me is that the cabin noise has dropped significantly. With the Federals on the car, it was like there was a bearing gone in the back, the road noise was that bad.

All in all, delighted with the decision.
