Kerry County Council withdraws Refuse Collection Service

    Hi there,
KCC will stop to collect domestic refuse in two weeks time (see here).

We have been customers of their very convenient service for years (we just bought the bin tags and recycling sacks in store). Now that they are about to leave the market - can anybody recommend a comparable price plan for just 1 bin collection per month (240l)? Under the current policy this would have cost around €90 per year/ €7.50 per bin collection including 2 recycling sacks with every bin tag bought. KWD's prices "from" €26 per month seem to be ridiculously expensive in comparison. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    P.S. We are in Tralee.

I use Higgins waste, two bins, recycling one collected free with main bin, i think 7.50 a go. I only put out bin once a month or maybe even less, am in Tralee town.

Thanks, I will give them a call.

Edit: Just to add to the confusion, radiokerry.ie writes "The sale doesn't affect the three town council collection services and County Manager Tom Curran said their future is a matter for the local authorities themselves."
So let's see what that means for us.

Are you sure this doesn't mean that the collections will go ahead as usual?

You buy your tags in the local shop and the bins are collected on the same day, but instead of the council workers collecting the bins workers from KWD collect them.

I am not sure about that but that would be the best solution. We will see, but today there has been another update on radiokerry:

Tralee and Listowel Town Councils to exit refuse collection service

Tralee and Listowel Town Councils are to exit the refuse collection service. This follows a similar decision from Kerry County Council on Monday. Both town councils say the sale follows a fundamental review of their refuse collection service. However, Killarney Town Council is opting to stay in the waste collection business. Both Tralee and Listowel Town Councils have signed contracts with Killarney firm, KWD Recycling, for the sale of their council refuse collection service. From December 5th, all customers of both town council's refuse collection service will have their bins collected by KWD Recycling. KWD also bought Kerry County Council's refuse service. The fee paid for all three waste collection services will not be disclosed as the buyer deems it to be commerically sensitive information. Fundamental reviews of the town council services were carried out, with external consultants reviewing the service and options available. Increased competition in the refuse collection service has resulted in a loss of customers to both businesses in recent years. While every effort was made to reduce their operating costs to make it more cost effective and competitive, and to attract more customers the councils continued to lose customers to private operators.

also try Dillons Waste, in the Kerries. We have used them for years and get a good price.

All bar Killarney Town Council seem to be ending their bin services. Bugger it, Tralee Town Council ran a decent service with the recycling bags.
