I think the Irishmans down by the courthouse would fit that category quiet nicely :)

For me, an 'old-man' bar has to have an open fire. Do any of these places mentioned have an open fire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭Nead21

Carpe Diem have a couple of open fires in the winter, but i'd hardly call that an old man pub.

Carpenter's springs to mind for me as a old man pub.

The irishmans is here - Link

However as Sir Digby Chicken Caesar said I am not sure what they are like for watching games.

You should also keep in mind that O'Loughlins is quiet the rugby pub and can be fairly full if there is an irish or Leinster match on that day.

Carpe Diem is another option and is down beside the Irishmans but again I am not sure what their sports viewing will be like

never really thought of O'Loughlins as "old-mans" ... more middle aged

That used to be Noel Duggans back in the day.

In the late '80s it used to be one of the main student pubs, so I guess a lot of it's clientelle would be middle aged now.

    Just like me.

Stonehaven would probably be fairly old skool, along with the Irishmans , Ewings & Reddys.

    Respectable style places.

That said, it's been a long time since I've socialised in Carlow.

It is most certainly still open.

Stonehaven is another pub with a more experienced clientele.

I think students still go to O'Loughlins, the back bar.

I definitely would have gone there when I was in school/college.

10 years ago, O'Loughlins was used by the rugby team and loads of students - not too many auld fellas in there - but it wasn't packed like the other places in town...

I lived near The Irishmans for a while and used to get the odd lock in after The Foundry. Most students wouldn't have been served, but one of our lecturers was a regular & after a while the barman got to know us.

I think the problem these days is that kids are used to shiney new bars without personality & anything older is considered an auld'fellas bar...

nope, that'd be the barracks or the dinn ri

barracks is a nicer spot though imo, and it's a good sports/football bar

well they might show champions league in o loughlins, but it's always been a rugby bar as far as my friends are concerned so we never went there for football.

The Barracks & The Med would not be 'old-man' pubs, but would be good for football. Both have large screens and give football priority over other sports.

It's a pity Kellys, near Burrin Bridge is gone out of business.

I went in for a few pints there about 15 years ago.

Now that place was proper 'old skool'.

Apparently, if late drinking there caught the attention of the law, plucky regulars used to abscond thru the back door, scale a wall & descend to safety onto the sandy river bank below.

This was why this pub was known to all locally as 'Dunkirk'.

    Now thats properly 'Proper'!:D

What do people think of Corcorans on GraigueCullen bridge, I often look in while passing and it always seems fairly quite. And it has that old timey feel to it too.

It scored well. I always mean to go in but never get around to it.

oh, that is an amazing bar

great pool table, fantastic guinness and a ****ing incredible jukebox

would you believe an "old man" bar would have pantera/anthrax/slayer and even some god damn blind guardian on their jukebox?

    well they do

and its 2 minutes walk from "carlow town"just ask anyone to direct you to graigue bridge and it's on the left just before the bridge

Is "the Loft" still open there? I spent quiet a while of my student days in "the loft bar" there was a great spot if the weather was decent.

Technically yes if you consider Carlow Castle to be in Carlow town then I would say so as it is to the side of it.

corcorans is here just before the bridge on the carlow side, its pretty much straight walk from tullow st
wouldn't say it's a football bar though. they have a small tv, or a couple of small tv's but it's a great pub for a few quiet pints
