VW door locks

Has anyone had this problem with a VW and can you suggest a cure. I have a 2008 Jetta. A few months ago the front passenger side door wouldn't unlock - the car has central locking. The problem was intermittent, but became more frequent. Eventually I had a new lock mechanism fitted by a main dealer and no further problems. Unfortunately the drivers door is now having the same problem. Is there any easy way to fix this without an expensive trip to the main dealer - the car is out of warranty.

Is this a frequent problem with VWs?

Getting it done at an independent garage will be cheaper.

Is it purely a problem with the electronic part of the lock, or will it not physically unlock either?

It used to be a problem on older VWs where the solder joints inside the electronic part of the lock would crack over time and cause all sorts of weird lock/unlock issues. I'd have though they'd have this sorted by now. The fix is to open up the lock and resolder all the joints inside the lock (I've two that need doing on my Passat again).

I have the same problem with my 2008 Golf. How much did it cost to fix at the main dealers? I must get it fixed its driving me mad!

It cost €250 at a main dealer in July to get the first one fixed. Roughly half for the parts and half labour.

Will be trying an independent garage this time.

I have also had a problem with the boot. Twice recently it has opened when the car was parked locked. So much for german reliability.

Thanks for the info, I hope my boot doesn't start acting up too. Even the Germans get it wrong now and again.....

I had similiar problem with a 2007 VW Touran. Went to main dealers and they fixed it for me. VW Ireland supplied the parts free of charge and the dealer went halves on the labour! haggle, haggle.

There is a long list of things that VW can't seem to get right. Door locks are high on that list. I work in a VW dealer at the minute and there are always problems with these locks. I would say at least 75% of golf 5's that I scan have at least one code stored for one of the locks. The faults are usually intermittent for a long time before they stop working altogether.

I have never heard of the locks being repaired but I would certainly like to see it as it could be a nice little earner.

They only take about 30 minutes to change but the dealer will try and squeeze as much as possible from you.

The saga continues. I went to a breakers and bought a replacement lock for €50. I brought it to a local garage who fitted it, but it didn't work. The breakers have supplied a second lock but now the door is locked shut and the local garage cannot open it and therefore can't fit the new lock.
To make it worse the fuel filler release is on the same door and this has stopped working - I assume the garage did something to it when fitting the lock. I can't add fuel.
Back to a different garge tomorrow. Any ideas on how to open the door? the interior trim can be removed but apparently this is not enough.

That happened to me once. I was able to get the metal panel off from inside the car, and then I had to break the electronic module off the lock with a pry bar so I could get at the mechanical part of the lock to open it.

Sounds to me like the deadlocks have engaged and won't disengage. Now if other switches on that door are not working, I'd have a quick look at the multi-plug that connects the door to the body just in case that's loose or disconnected.

Chances are your original lock is perfect mechanically and it's just iffy wiring connections in it. Get a multimeter and check for continuity through all the bits inside the electronic module. Also, get someone with diagnostics to interrogate the CCM for fault codes, it may report more specifically on what the problem is.

Im having a similar problem with my Golf.. the drivers door keeps forcing all the doors to lock and unlock and the sound is driving me mad, it now wont take the key or close properly. Hoping its not going to be too expensive to get replaced !

Same problem in both our SEATS. I did a DIY on them not costing, but still a pain in the ass.
