When you say "fancy party" how formal is it? If the invitation says "formal" then it means black tie not just a suit.

Invitation doesnt state any dress type,

    It's a ball

More a question of what not to wear....

Good choice with a white shirt and a dark suit. If it's a ball but not overly formal you'll do nicely with a relatively plain navy suit, with a plain white shirt and a slightly fancy tie, perhaps with several colours...none too pronounced. That way you draw attention to your face...

It's often useful to have a couple of suits with relatively subtle patterns to the fabric...you can wear them to anything with a white shirt and the mood of how you're dressed is determined by your tie....so invest in a few nice ties. It's cheaper than having to buy half a dozen suits...

Also, dont wear a suit with a strong, pronounced pin stripe like many FF TD's of the last Dail. You'd end up looking like...well...a FF TD from the last Dail, or a solicitor who deals mostly with criminal clients... ;-)

Whatever you do, don't wear brown shoes! Black shoes only with black, navy or grey suits....and make sure they're shining!

Also, when wearing suits, make sure your shoes are darker than the suit....eg. don't wear tan shoes with dark brown suits...unless you want people looking at your feet....

The only reason you want girls looking at your feet is..eh...to see how big they are....by which time you know you've already gotten the tie right ;-)

    Right!

I've brought it down to :

Navy suit, white shirt, black shoes, and either light blue or dark burgundy tie

Go with the Burgundy, to give a bit more contrast.

Eh, what? Brown shoes can work very well with grey suits (though not all), and brown shoes are generally much better with navy suits than black, which /usually/ don't work.

Agree about the pinstripe though. Subtle is in, loud is out.
