AFAIK only way to get all Saorview channels at present is via an aerial and a suitable set top box, TV with inbuilt compatible tuner or PVR with similar tuner. Saorsat (Saorview channels via satellite) has not been officially launched and is testing at present but when it launches you will need a separate box from sky box and a dish pointed in different direction from Sky dish.

    Rip Off Ireland? Hardly.

The "extra" channels on Saorview not on Sky are barely real.

RTEjr is repeats of RTE earlier in the day.
RTE news now is just the regular RTE news repeated in a loop in a window with annoying adverts for iThing apps at the side.
    There is hardly any HD.

No-one on UPC or Sky is missing anything important. Saorview is simply Digital replacement for Analogue. It *MIGHT* have more HD and channels later, and then Sky & UPC will carry them too.

Must disagree Watty I thing its well worth getting for HD sport alone. I think its a clever move on RTE's behalf to keep RTE HD off sky as it definitely helps in promoting Saorview.

I maybe wrong here but it seems most programmes I have seen on RTE2 since I got Saorview have HD label attached to programme information.

Yes, but it will be on Sky as HD soon enough and while sport is very important to some it's not actually a majority of viewers and maybe < 1% of viewing time.

I'm not arguing it shouldn't be on Sky. It will be when there is a commercial case for it. Sometime between Summer 2012 and Spring 2013.

I don't believe Sky want it yet, (Sky will have to pay for the carriage and encryption) so maybe a bit hypothetical to claim RTE is withholding it. Sky complain fast enough and they have not yet complained.

What do you base this assertion on? If flies directly in the face of what I was told at the last meeting I had with RTE.

I claim nothing and its not hypopthetical, I was told this by Ray Magiure directly as its their stated policy to reserve RTE HD for Saorview

I believe that when Sky want it and are willing to pay all the costs any delay will be not more than a month or two after negotiations. I'm perfectly aware of what RTE says. Today.

RTE can only "withhold" it during a test/rollout phase.

Its far from certain that they are obliged to provide the HD version of RTE 2, negotiations or not.

I have been saying this for months that it is RTE policy to withold the extra Saorview channels and in particular the HD version of RTE Two. I agree the extra channels aren't much to sing about but the HD feed is of value. Can someone report this post for being potentially libellous again now?

I have one now. What a gift. :D
Excellent quality, DVD player, have the 19" flatscreen connected to my Laptop, I got a "Lloytron" indoor aeriel just for the free six Channels because I don't watch much tv anyway so six is perfect.
No I'm not a rep for them. Well worth it. :)
