HELP!! cant get a christmas job anywhere

Right i'm just 17 and still attending school and i want a christmas job or part time, anything!
I live in Swords and have sent in a CV to about 28 shops in the pavilions, three times!
I got my CV checked out by my career guidance teacher and she said it was really professional but i just haven't got any luck at all.

here's what my CV is like:
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/13vE5PC792nH5WXoPr9ayjtSl47t7quQui-rXdxm0lk8/edit
feel free to give me any hints please

I've even done cover letters too: here's one to Next
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aSDbnthWIe0DGW3Iy6oknyJRcNB4TiObftQ97XKm8dw/edit

Recently Argos were looking for Christmas placements, I sent in a CV twice in the space of 2 weeks and no reply. A mate of mine who also applied got the job, she lives all the way in Bettystown! no offence but I've a better chance of turning up since I live like 20 minutes away on foot.

    I'm frustrated here haha.
Does anybody know anywhere who are looking to hire? I'm willing to do weekday nights and all weekend if I have to.

I sent in CV's into practically every shop in the Pavilions Shopping Centre on Wednesday hopefully I'll get a reply soon.

    Thanks for reading anyways.
If you see a flaw of some sort in my CV or approach let me know I'd appreciate it a lot

Please dont think I'm being racist or anything, I'm just trying to be helpful and point out that racisim does happen, I'd shorten your second name a bit, I know a guy that has 20 something letters in his second name and he just uses the first 4 and last 3 when he is writing his name. It makes it look a lot simpler. I also know two guys that run their own business and they share business cards, both are irish but one has a muslim second name, they have laid out business cards and flyers loads of different ways and the guy with the Irish second name always gets more than twice as many calls as the guy with the muslim name even though they are both as Dublin as you could get.

I'd also get an email address without lcvp in it, it looks childish or something.

Jude , sorry to hear of your difficulties finding work , a sign of the bad times we live in.
It may be best if you did not have your CV up for the world to see - you are giving away a lot of personal details to absolutely anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,293 ✭✭✭Dinkie

Not sure if they are your real details, but would edit them out if they are.

I would try and fit in some more social achievements if you have them - clubs, emphasise team work, organisation, work on own initiative.

Also there is a formatting error for one of your junior cert subjects.

Hi, if these are your real details I'd remove them ASAP. If not, mods delete the links.
    Good luck job hunting.

No offence taken .. i guess its just a case of charity begins at home ay?
I wanted to, but i saw it as dishonest like if you got a CV form someone who lied about their name then what would you think. o.O

Are you actually posting CV's to shops? If so you might have better luck physically walking into the stores, asking to speak with someone in charge and hand in your CV personally.

But tbh, your chances are slim to none simply because there are almost half a million other people looking for work too.

Are you making up a different cover letter for each job or just recycling the same one. Same with the CV, you want to make it specific to each job so that they know you are serious and not just throwing in the same old thing each time, a lot of dole bags would do this just to show SW that they are trying to find a job.

However times is hard, so finding a job is not going to be easy regardless of what you do. Best of luck anyway.

I wouldn't call it dishonest, If you used a fake name that would be, but myself if i was going to call you I'd find it awkward because I have no idea how to pronounce you name. Maybe consider using the first 5 letters, that looked easy enough to me.

Id change your number too, 087******* will do, I don't think it makes too much of a difference but the +353 makes it look awkward, and some people possible wouldnt realise that +353 is the same as 00353.

    to be honest i am
i'm just being lazy about but editing 28 CV's to match the job im applying for is really time consuming haha
i'll find time to do that

    and thanks

no, no I've always physically delivered them to the shops
I've been able to meet the managers a few times but mostly no.
it's really frustrating because i get the feeling that "ah well that's going straight in the bin" haha

    Congrats on being a tool.

I'd rather see my fellow citizens, whom are unemployed, get hired over foreigners.

    Nothing wrong with that.

I haven't read your CV, but one thing to bear in mind is that if you're still at school you're looking at solely "out of school" hours, which have the most competition. I remember from my own school/college days that shops always managed to fill the evening/weekend slots, and were often more interested in finding people for the 9-5 slots in the run up to Christmas.

I don't mean to discourage you, by all means keep trying, but I used get very disheartened - all the hours for students were invariably taken up by sons/daughters/cousins of existing staff.

Nothing wrong with feeling how you feel, but feel free to keep it to yourself rather than publicly indulging in racism.

nobody really took any notice of whoever they were and im getting good feedback from this too :)

Basically, because you have no experience.

Lets say Next are hiring for a sales assistant.

They come across two CV's, Yours has no retail experience. John Smith has 2 years working part time in say, Pennys. 99% of the time they will call Mr Smith for the interview.

yeah thats true but like i said Argos were hiring and i know 4 girls who got the job and they've no work experience at all and still go to secondary, one is in college now. and another case was when one of my mates got one in Lifestyle Sports in pavilions and I've sent in 3 CVs to them already with no luck.
like you probably don't know how much i want a job right now haha

It's difficult to get a job without experience. If you aren't already doing it, hand in your CV personally to the manager. Perhaps have a quick chat with them and give them a chance to get a good impression of you. It's easy to dismiss a faceless "dropped-in" CV but putting a personal aspect on to it will leave a lasting impression on the employer and will lead them to actually consider your application a bit further.

Thanks, i will try that this week, but im not sure how to approach it. will i just ask a member of staff if the manager is around and hand him/her my CV?
and what if they're not available will i come back again later on?
Sounds like a stupid question but i just don't wanna be acting like a pest annoying them with CVs all the time haha

Work for anyone is hard to find at this time but try Dunnes Stores. I don't know anyone who has applied and hasn't been called for an interview so its worth a shot. Plus coming up to christmas they have a night shift from 6-10 or 12.

Unfortunately most company's and places want someone who can work any hours and are flexible also the other problem is your only 17. Under the law 16 and 17 years cannot work past 10pm in most places so that could be another disadvantage to you. Just keep trying. I know its frustrating but no harm in trying.

i've tried Dunes twice the second time i got a very cold response from the member of staff i gave my CV to (im pretty sure she threw it away haha)
ill try again and this time try to talk to a manager

and yeah being in school and 17 isn't the best right now

other than just dropping in CVs to shops, ask your friends in school that is already working for a shop..

Recommendation from a friend is typically easier in my experience for retail types of job.. they are like your pre-introduction..

West Dublin, ☀️ 7.83kWp ⚡5.66 kWp South West, ⚡2.18 kWp North East
