Advice on 2 nd hand pajero

    Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing a 2 nd hand Pajero lwb. It's originally a Japanese import and is in immaculate condition however it has 225,000 k on it. It is a private sale and the seller says it has been serviced every 9,000 k and has a new cylinder head gasket. What questions should I be asking about what work has been done to the engine- its pretty high mileage - what major jobs should have been done already?

Thanks for your input- I know zero about cars

Get underneath and check ladder frame for rust.

I had a 2.5 a was and loved it and would love another. A bit thirsty though it was an Auto.
The 2.8 is a timing chain rather then a belt.
Turbo's have a bad habit of letting go (still have a blown turbo in the attic) and had a real issue getting a replacement. Ended up getting it rebuilt.
Do a bit of research and find out what oil is best suited. 2.5 loved pure mineral oil but HAD to be dropped every couple of thousand kms without fail.
Make sure the 4wd works fully.
Has the owner got a reciept for the head gasket being done?
The cause of the head blowing is that the rad gets gunked up and needs to be cleaned out on a fairly regular basis.
Also clean out the intercooler on a regular basis as this helps with the turbo?
A lot of the egr valves are blanked off as the Pajero's are fairly smoky and the egr gets badly gunked up. (No engine management lights come's on)You can buy egr blanking plates which are paj specific in the UK.
A tank of a machine but if you are prepared to do your own servicing (buy genuine filters from the main dealer) will offset the cost of filling it with juice on a regular basis.
I had repalced the diff oil which was handy enough to do.
200,000 odd km is nothing to these...Will go forever!
    Does it have an NCT?

Thanks, yes it has NCT till 2013. So I should check if timing chain and turbo have been done? What about water pump? Gearbox?
I'll check if she has the gasket receipts
I loved the 2.8 auto I had. Heavy on juice alright!

I'd take the mileage on a Jap import with a pinch of salt. They are known to get a hair cut on the ship over.

The timing chain should last the lifetime of the engine. If it has been done then all the better (with a reciept of course).
Again with the turbo you van ask if it has gone. I would expect it to have blown before now.
There is no real way of knowing if its about to go as they are smoky machines so a smoky exhaust is not an indicator.
Auto or Manual? Just as a matter of interest what year is it?
