In before the "it's gay" posts. :pac:

Yeah did a bit of brazilian jiu jitsu myself. so I enjoy the odd fight (watching, not participating.....!). Not as in to it as some are though. It's enjoyable when you know the technique and what the guy is actually trying to do. And not titter at the word "mount".

    I like MMA.
Problem is it can be boring.
Generally on a PPV you are interested in 1 or 2 matches. Which often dont live up to the hype. But over-all most matches arent too exciting. If two guys are on the ground too much I aint jumping from me seat.

if you have espn they will replay shogun vs. henderson tonight, im just after watchin it live
i love my boxing but i have to say it was more brutal, bloody and exciting than 'the thrilla in manilla' and the 'rumble in the jungle' put together

Yeah i like watching it but dont have the channels anymore. I think the matches in the lighter weight divisions are more entertaining as the heavyweight matches are often at a slower pace because the guys are bigger. Having said that though Andrei Arlovski was very fast for a heavyweight.

Arlovski is a washed up can at this stage pal

If they broke up fighters when they went to the ground, UFC would be 10 times more popular than it is. Watching 2 grown men grappling about on the ground is fcuking tedious.

If I want to watch two fellas beat the living shite out of eachother I will watch GAA or International Rules. :)

    IBT Locked/Moved

Lads if we really wanted to read/discuss/argue about the merits of UFC/MMA we'd, y'know, maybe visit the forum dedicated to such activities.

Without even touching on the homoerotic aspect of it I don't regard it as much of a sport. Not disputing the level of athleticism involved but legalised thuggery would be a closer description.

Still better than pro-wrestling though - who other than 12yr old boys watches that??

SO what you're saying is you'd prefer boxing :P

It can go both ways really. Some of the best fights I've seen have been fought on the ground but it really depends.

I'm sure it is interesting if you trained in brazilian jui juitsu, but my point is the majority of people don't and so UFC will never be mainstream as long as its included. It does not make for a good spectator sport. Its a shame really cause UFC do so many things right compared to how boxing is run today.

I've stopped watching UFC ever since they classed eye gouging as a foul. The sport become a pussy's game then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,418 ✭✭✭Icyseanfitz

meh any sport that involves two grown ass men rolling around on top of each other for rounds at a time is not watchable in my opinion (i dont care about the amazing technique its just crap to watch....unless your into that stuff ;)).

if it was all standing id love it as i do boxing, except it would be even better as they have their legs/elbows/knees/fists to use.

i dont think any fight sport would compare to seeing pac kick mayweathers head in :D

If they broke up fighters when it went to the ground it wouldn't be MMA though.

While i agree with you that sometimes a ground fight can be dull if someone is stalling for points but watching too skilled grapplers can be highly entertaining.

Unlike soccer lets say. Which is 22 chaps chasing balls in little shorts and when they are done they all go off to film their shampoo and underwear ads.

    Straight as ****. :D

It bores me to tears, you have dudes who are experts in every martial art known to man and they always end up on the floor trying to get each other in a head lock.

If I wanted to be entertained by that I would wait outside the local chipper at half 2 on a saturday morning.

On the other hand though I saw one clip where one dude broke the other dudes ribs with a punch then went in for the kill but the broken ribs dude walloped him with a haymaker and won by KO. That was class now in fairness, but really rare.

    Scott Smith Vs Pete Sell.

    Crazy finish to that fight!

It was fun back in the days when they were soccer kicking the heads of each other. The days when don frye roamed the arenas of this planet hurting people and genki sudo made crazy entrances and pulled even crazier stunts during his fights

Now it's being watched by saps in tapout tshirts and dribbling culchies who think that they can use dopey buzzwords like "beasting" without sounding ridiculous.

    Bayshting...Bayshting...Baaayshting

As with many sports at the start it's gotten a bit boring to non-enthusiasts and could maybe do with some tweaks. They've managed to sell it well enough and have enough music and lights to keep some people happy though so I'm sure for now the UFC is happy enough with how much money they're making.

the lack of knowledge of mma disappoints me

look up pride/ufc HL's on youtube or watch dan henderson vs. shogun rua which is only over a few hours ago

the fight was more brutal and bloody than ali-frazier 2,the thrilla in manilla

im tellin ya lads, you'll thank me for it if ye watch it...1 of the best fights ever in any combat sport

There's little better than Pride highlights when ya get home drunk. :pac: The issue I have with the UFC is that they've gotten to the skill point (within the current rules) that I just don't find it entertaining. It's a bit like American football, often the better the two teams playing are, the less entertaining it is. College football on the other hand is more entertaining the better the teams are because they're not quite good enough to cancel each other out.

    That made me LOL :D

I often tell the lads in the club that I get idiots in Tapot gear giving me advice when I'm on the door.

    Its almost always hilarious.

Or I love the BJJ geeks who tell me they "do mma", so I act dumb (ya I know, its hardly an effort for me) and say "whats MMA".. Then feel pity for them when they try delude themselves & me that BJJ is MMA lol.

Topic - I love watching MMA, and in particular the Irish scene.. I rarely watch the UFC, its just a promotion that never grabbed my imagination.

And now that its big with the Pro-Wrestling clowns I like it even less.

i agree, the soccer kicks and foot stomps in pride made it more of a street fight, but the only way the ufc got it legalized in the U.S was by banning them so i guess it had to be done

didnt matter tonight tho, UFC 139 was a whopper card, nearly every fight had a KO or submission. as for the hendo/shogun fight.....just watch it man! ive watched it 3 times already, what a fcukin fight

It wasn't even those bits. Maybe it's just because it's highlights/classic fights I've come across but it seems like it was more "active", at least to someone with just a passing interest. I know obviously that when they're on the ground they're trying, but too often I'm saying after 30 seconds "stand them up" and it takes the referee another minute to agree with me :pac:

Was going to watch it tonight, thanks for the spoiler. :pac: Will most likely avoid this thread til I watch it, I don't think AH has any rules about spoilers. :pac:

Ah no, he's "your boy" because thats what all the americans on MMA forums say . Plus it was "a war" and there was "brutal beatdown". Also hendo was "walking around" at 195 and the ref pulled "a douche move" in the fight. Ya gotta talk like a gobsheen to really appreciate this sport :pac:

I amnt a UFC expert but surely the sheer endurance and will to win that has to be displayed is the main draw, no? Saw last night's fight and it was the closest thing you could see to gladiators going to battle. Not much comes close in any sport to the endurance mentality displayed last night.

Joe Rogan does my head in though. Insincere tosser!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,438 ✭✭✭✭El Guapo!

Best sport in the world in my opinion.
I don't follow any other sports really. I used to watch a lot of boxing but not as much any more- only really watch the big fights if I'm honest. Might watch the odd football match but nothing grabbed my attention like mma.

It takes a LOT of skill, dedication, sacrifice, and extreme athleticism to become a world class mma fighter. Anybody who says "it's just two blokes bating each other" hasn't got a clue what they're talking about.

Regarding when the fighters got to the ground and grapple.....I'll agree, some of the fights can get boring if not much is happening on the ground. But 90% of the time it's like a chess match on the ground and to the educated eye it's fantastic to watch.
