Is there a system for free to air irish and UK channels, with planner and recording?

    Hello

Totally green on this, have Sky with Sky+ via satellite and love it, but it's too expensive. Does anyone know of a system we could have installed that's close - ie: systems allow you to receive UK and Irish
free to air channels, with a planner and recording function, with one
remote? and that's pretty easy to use?

    Thanks in advance, Susiespark:confused:

To put it bluntly, no, not yet anyway.

    The VU+ Duo.

It is a twin satellite receiver and you add a DTT tuner as a USB dongle.

Its what I use with an image installed called VIX (free). It provides recording, series link, 7 day epg etc integrated on all services (satellite and DTT).

Thanks very much! am heading over there now to see if I can find someone to tell me what I need equipment wise, and hopefully someone to set it up as I'm definitely an "end user", not a techie :o

    Susie,
Your existing Sky+ dish will work fine. That gets the satellite free stuff into your house. Now what about Irish Digital Terrestrial TV ? Are you currently able to pick up digital channels (Saorview)? Are you currently able to receive TG4/TV3 on an aerial? Now just answer that question first and we;ll get you there.

The VU+ Duo thread that I pointed to earlier is very technical and I referred to it just to show it to you. I wouldn't advise reading it as an end user. Lots of techie stuff there that is defunct/irrevant etc.

Thanks m1nder, after reading some of the posts I thought we're just stuck with sky so.. Your guidance would be much appreciated :)

Atm, we've got next generation wireless broadband, a sky satellite dish, a sky+ HD box plugged into the phone line, a "HD ready" tv that doesn't have built in receivers or anything (about 6 yrs old), a PC that's in the same room as the tv, and no aeriel.

Oh, and the Sky box doesn't work when the card is taken out - not sure if that's relevant but just tried it to see if it would work without a card...

What do you think we should do next? Thanks again, Susie

You want a combo system that gives you free satellite channels and free domestic tv. You have a sat dish, so next you need a domestic aerial. You need an aerial that will pick up digital terrestrial tv (DTT). This has recently been launched in Ireland as Saorview.

Some people can pickup Saorview on rabbits ears, depends on your proximity to your nearest DTT Transmitter. See here - http://www.mpeg4ireland.com/aerial-setup

In my case I live about 40Km from Truskmore. We had an old Aerial up on the chimney and that still works perfectly to pickup new DTT signal. So if and when you sort out that aerial setup, you then have two TV sources coming into the house. Its then time to decide on a set top box / accessories / software.

So lets deal with this step first.
