How does a back boiler fireplace get in the hole?

Have a 1983 typical Irish 3 bed-semi, theres a fireplace with back boiler in situ. It confuses the hell out of me, how did/do they connect up the pipework at the rear of the boiler when the boiler is the same size as the opening it has to fit into? Seems like rocket science....
